Six vears n^o, we had no use For "provost guards and clowns. With big brass eagles on their caps, Parading through our towns; A police sergeant, with bis squad Of half-a-dozen men, Was quito enough, by day or night. T<> quell a riot, then. Six years ugo, the press was free, And ir. ju could speak their mind, Nor had the "habeas corpus writ" Peen kicked clear out behind. We had no saucy negroes, then. To crowd our Senate balls. Nor did we ever read about Amalgamation balls. Six years ago. a wench would wed With '-Pomp" or "Sambo," freely. Put now, she wants a "Stevens," A "Sumner" or a "Greeley:" For, o'er the spirit of their dream this swept a mighty wave: The negro is thc master now. The white man is the slave. Six years ago, the Democrats Were masters in the House, And every person, North and South. Was quiet as a mouse; i But now, the Abolition crew. Have undertook the job; The negro is their "hobby-horse." Their object is to rob. A Dirty Cuss. The Philadelphia Mercury, speak? ing of the parado of. the '.'mean whites," in that city, says: "The most disgusting feature of the disunion procession, on Mohday last, was thc profane old scoundrel, Brownlow, from Tennessee. He passed our office in an open carriage, stretched out at full length, with his feet hanging over the side, and ex? hibited the dirtiest pair of stockings we ever saw on a white mau. Now, there was no excuse for this; there is plenty of water here, and he should at least have some respect for the people of Philadelphia, if he has none for himself. Parson, haveyour stockings washed before you go home." It would be no use, Mr. Mercury all the water in the Fairmount Water Works would not cleanse the foul and reeking carcass of the nastiest devil outside of hell's polluted shades. If a lightning machine was invented to strip the stockings, shirts and clothing from oft" his hide, at the rate of 250 suits an hour, it would be found that every suit was so thoroughly aud hor? ribly impregnated with tilth, as to fall in fragtne.uts from utter rottenness. Pity him; pray for him; his fate is more horrible than that of Cain; more terrible than that ol' the fabled "wandering Jew!" He lives to prove what a foul and monstrous demon can take the form of man and preach and act the gos? pel of rump treason. Clean him-oh, no, Philadelphia Mercury, it cannot be done; many things are possible, but the cleansing of Brownlow, like the invention of perpetual motion, can never be real? ized by weak humanity. Somewhere, we have read that un apartment in the chateau of the Em? press Josephine still retains, in all its strength, her favorite perfume. Brownlow once lectured (?) in a Me? thodist Church we know of, in the early stages of his decomposition. The church was closed, after his ha? rangue, until the next Sunday. The sexton came to build a fire, opened the door-a blast worse than the si? moon, more horrible than the com? bined odors of a thousand sewers and ten thousand cesspools smote his sense of smell! He was a defunct Methodist instanter. Two weeks from that day, the horrible tincture of Brownlow had so exhausted its power that a dozen New York scavengers could remove the pulpit, but still the fragrance lingered. Ministers came by dozens, under promise of a large salary, to fill the pulpit, but thev withered, wasted, sickened. Some became idiotic, others blasphemers, a few comfirmed invalids. Finally', the board of health burned the sanc? tuary, for the public good. Months have passed since then, but, on dark nights, a m'asmatic light, like that playing in the form of a "wili-o-the - - . J .wisp," overa swamp, ia seen right over the spot once occupied by the viulp?t, and H scent ns of two hundred festive pole-cats and fifty aromatic Africans floats on "tho calm, still, summer air."
