Forrest, gives the following estimate of him : Viii character as a whole was a union of that of Lannes und Suchet. When tho time for action came, he was terrible as a thunderbolt. With the qualities of the marshals iii the respects named, he united to the fixedness of purpose the tenacity of Massena. His doggedness of resolu? tion was proverbial. It was like the grasp of death. An undertaking was nevei abandoned, unless forced by orders-a battle never over until it was won. The doubts, even the pa? nics of others, had no effect to taine his obstinacy of purpose; but, falling back upon his own iron self-reliance, he was every inch a man in the dark? est hour of tho storm. It was then, in the mid-night darkness of trial, that hi:s genius, like stars in thc night, shone most brightly. l ie was accustomed to look upon nothing as impossible. Bad roads and the waste of waters could bc over? come by "It shall be so!" Small num? bers, with rapid marches and concen? trated efforts, could destroy indolent superiority. He was fond of artillery, and would stand behind a working battery, enjoying its exercise with all the glee-ol' a delighted child. Not unfrequently has he been known to direct a section or battery in person, superintending the minutest details. Hence, in this respect, he is with? out a peer in the annals of the revo? lution. Leading a charge in person was his favorite pastime. Tho glory of single combat ho too often court? ed-oftener than wisdom justified riding like a young Bedouin, an ex? cellent pistol shot and skilful swords? man, with a frame of great muscular power, he has. with his own right hand, won moro success than any officer of the war. . i PERSIMMONS-ROUGH. -The Rich? mond correspondent of the Danville Register tells thc following anecdote about Gen. "Alleghany" Johnston, on the march to Bristoe Station, in the fall of 1863. Tho General was riding along the road, and perceiving one of his men up a persimmon tree, holloaed out to him: "I say, there, what are yan doing np there. Why ain't you with your regiment?" "I'm gettin' simmons, I um," re? plied the soldier. "Persimmons, thunder! They are. not ripe yet. They are not fit to eat." "Yes, but, General," persisted the Conied., "T am trying to draw my stomach up to suit the size of my rations. If it stays like it is now, I shall starve." The (General had nothing further to say, hv.t rode on. A few weeks ago, a baby was taken to church to be baptized, and his little brother was present during that sacrament. On the following Sun? day, when baby was undergoing his ablutions and dressing, the little brother asked mamma if she intend? ed to carry Willie to be christened. "Why, no," said his mother, "don't you know, my son, people are not baptized twice?" "What!" returned the young reas'uer, with the utmost astonishment in his earnest face, "i ' if it don't take the first time?"
