The office of this agent is lo give
thom the truth as to the state of the
crops, ami to generally promote
their interests.
He says: "Between the drouth,
rain ?ind caterpillar, our crop of cotton
will be very short, and I do not think
we will ship from our port over
80,001? bales, against 100,000 last year
and 9,000 in 1800. Believe me, 1 am
not croaking, but I give you facts
and I have thom from all parts of the
country. The rains that we have had
since my return from Texas have
been so general and heavy that all
the squares full off, ami the late cot?
ton has, in many eases, rotted.
Should the rain clear np, and we
have a late fall, we may clo a little
Lefter."
A letter to the same house, fro iii
Bayou (ionia, (Parish of lberville,)
says, under date of 13th inst. :
"For more than a week past rain
has continued to fall upon ns daily,
flooding the country. We hear from
??very one the serious damage done to
the cotton. The rot is extending
higher up the stalk than i have ever
seen before. I doubt that if more
than half a crop eau bo made. The
caterpillar is also at work, but is not
so disastrous to the crop as the con?
tinued cloudy weather ami the total
absence of sun.
"The corn is doing well, and this
weather is favorable to it. My corn
will improve about as much as 1 lose
on tho coition. I hope J shall never
be called" upon to plant cotton again
in this i '.irish."
A New Orleans letter reports the
appearance ol' th?y regular army worm
in different sections of the State, iu
addition to the depredations of
which incessant rains had prevailed
for nearly two weeks, doing serious
damage to the cotton crop on the
uplands. "The rain," .says the
writer, "slops the opening of the
cotton, and mildews and spoils that
which is already open." From Mis?
sissippi, thc letter states, thc accounts
are equally unfavorable, and one-fifth
of the crop is now generally acknow?
ledged to be :is much as will be
realized. The result is most disheart?
en i ag to the planters, who have boen
living the past year ou the strength
of the crop, which they now find a
serious failure, and themselves further
in debt. (J?rn and potatoes have
done better. Sugar cane is doing
well, despite tho rain, which fortu?
nately does not injure it.
A despatch from New Orleans
says:
News from the cotton regions con?
tinues to report, the injury to the
crops as ?crions and wide-spread.
Only the .small district on the up?
lands of the Mississippi seems ex ctn pt.
Otherwise the States of Louisiana
and Mississippi are afflicted with
* nearly a total loss of the cotton crop,
while very little corn or other bread
stuffs have been raised.
This is peculiarly tho case where
negroes have worked on shares, which
leads Hiern now to be very reluctant
to labor, and has greatly dishearten
t il them.

eye-witness of the adair at Platte
City, Missouri, on Saturday, states
that the conduct of the rebels, the
arms they .carried, and their large

were killed, and three or four others
will probably die. About ono dozen
were wounded. Tho affair creates
a profound sensation, and serious
trouble-is apprehended.

The above celebrated Works were originated and erected during the yea^s 1847,'48
and '49, by theprt'Mcnt senior proprietor, who has (with short interruptions) been con?
stantly connected with t be-in as the principal manager, and since 1865, in connection
