From Cordova.;
We nre indebted to the Memphis
Avalanche for the followiug reliable
account from the Cordova settlement
in Mexico, furnished to that paper
by Mr. Small, who has just returned
home, after a stay of six months in
that country :
"Upon arriving at Vera Cruz,
(about the 25th of March last,) lu
found it necessary to secure protective
papers from the French Agent ol
Colonization, stationed there for thal
purpose. Those en route for Cordove
started from Vera Cruz for Paso de!
X.aoha, thence by stage to Cordova,
arriving at this point after abonl
twelve or fourteen hours' travel. Th?
hotel in Cordova (Dixie Hotel) is ele
gently kept by Mr. <T. A. Robinson
of Alabama. After a stay of a week
Mr. Small proceeded to the ruins o
the old Hacienda Omealka, adistanei
of about thirty-five miles, for th?
purpose of taking possession of tin
ground, he and his companions having
riled claims to it in the office of Hon
Judge John Perkins, ex-Governor o
Louisiana, who war. then acting a
r agent for the colonization of aban
doned and confiscated lauds. Hi
found the ruins of an old house
which, to use Mr. Small's language

might have rolled over it in nndis
turbed quiet.

Of the climate, Mr. S. says that

enables him to give tho Mexicans a
very pale picture, which is said to
suit them exactly, as they have a
very natural desire to appear, photo?
graphically, at least, as white as pos?
sible.
Mr. S. informs us, also, that it is
the general belief among the wealthy
and intelligent portions of the people,
that the condition of tile country
would be immensely benefitted under
the unbroken, undisturbed rule of
Maximilian, than if left to be go
vemeds&s a republican people. The
French occupy all the larger towns,
and the railroad from Vera Cruz to
Paso del Macho is guarded by French
soldiers, and is seldom interrupted ?r
attacked. The diligences traveling
through the country aro often at?
tacked, and the passengers, be they
who they may, robbed of everything
they possess-and, in many cases,
murdered. Beyond, and just outside
I the French garrisons, bands of armed
' robbers piowl through the country,
and render it insecure to travel the
roads. The companions of Mr. Small,
during his trip, were Capt. Thos. H.
Gourier, of Iberville Palish, La.,
Henrv W. Allon, of Clarksville, Tenn.,
J. H." Moystor, of Memphis, C. \V.

and^C. P. Lockhart, of Memphis.
TRADE BETWEEN THE UNITED
STATES AND CCBA.-On August 20,
the Spanish Government issued a de?
cree ordering that, for six months
after the day upon which such decree
shall he published in Havana, no ex- j
port duties will be levied in Cuba
upon articles now subject to tho regu?
lations of the Spanish tariff, and that
no distinctions ure to be made on ac
couut of the nationality of vessels
taking in cargoes at any Cuban port.
This provision will no doubt largely
increase the export trade of Cuba,
and be ot' great benefit to American
merchants importing Cuban produc- j
tions. The Custom House officers in
the island are directed to keep a re?
cord of the value of the articles ex?
ported during the six months in which
the decree will be in force, in order
that it may bo used for statistical
comparison.

The above celebrated Works were originated a:id erected during the years 1847,'48
and '49, by the present senior proprietor, wno has (with short interruptions) been con?
stantly connected with them as tue principal manager, and since 1863, in connection
with his junior brothers, limier the style of Emery Brothers.
During the sumtner of l*o2, he attended thu v\?"or?d's Fair at London, with some of
hi-* leading inventions, and remained abroad nearly two years, engaged in successfully
establishing their manufacture.
In the meantime, owing to embarrassments and losses, the firm of Emery Brothers,
consisting of Wm. B. and G. W. Emery, made aa assignment, and these entire works
ami business were sold, and purchased by oilier parties, atid thc said firm ceased to
exist from November 1, 1S?2, leaving the brothers. Wm. B. and G. W., hopelessly bank?
rupt.
On his return from England, in the early parr of 1364, the present senior proprietor
negotiated 1er and re-purchased the entire interest, real and personal, in end to these
works and business, including its entire accumulation of patterns, working machinery
and ita business, ami continued thc sanie, with the aid of Wm. B. and G. W.. to No?
vember 1, 1804, when he assumed hs entire management on his own account-Wm. B
and O. W., for a very,valuable cash consideration, preferring to relinquish all antici?
pated interests and retir-' therefrom, and with tho intention with these funds of com?
promising with their creditors.
He has since associated with him his eldest son, HORACE HERBERT EMERY, under
the style and name at the head of this notice, and continuos thc business, in all i.s
branches, at tho old stand-than which no more complete establishment of its kind
exists in the country.
They have largely increased their facilities, made many new and valuable additions
and improvements to their already large assortment of machines, which their expe?
rience and observation, at home ami abroad, have suggested as desirable.
The senior member of tim timi is the pioneer of this business here, and he has been
thc designer, protector and patentee of all the leading and successful machines which
have given the wide celebritv to th?s?' works: among winch arc the EMERY HORSE
POWERS, COTTON GINS "and CONDENSERS, Threshing Machine-. Sawing Mills.
Corn Shellers, Churning Machines, Cotton openers, ?fcc, all of which they now offer
the public on the most liberal terms, and a continuance of their patronage" is solicited.
In tho articles of Cotton Gins and Condensers, they are the only parties manufactur?
ing them with the improvements which have given these (Tins the precedence and their
world-wide reputation, notwithstanding other parties are now representing that they
have purchased the Emery Agricultural Works and are making these celebrated ma
chines-as a glance at the facts and their machines will satisfy thc most common
observer.
