THE NEW FIVE CENT PIECE.-A
correspondent of the American .lour
nal of Ne um is ?nades, writes:
After a careful search during the
first half of the present year, I have
ut length succeeded, by thc help of a
friend, in obtaining a proof (?) sot of
the one, two, titree and fi ve cent pieces
of 18(50; and inasmuch ns the latter
piece, particularly, is an "original,"
both in design and workmanship,
perhaps a description of it may
prove acceptable.
I say it is an "orignal," because T
have seen nothing like it in my col?
lections, which abounds in all sorts;
"bung downs," Chinese cash, Ger?
man stivers, hellers and kreutzers;
therefore, I think I am correct in the
statement.
On the obverse of this remarkable
coin, the first thing that attracts tho
attention ia a very elaborate and
highly ornamented gridiron, lite
clumsy handle of which appeals to be
broken from the body, thus render?
ing this culinary utensil almost use?
less. The upper part und sides of
this gridiron are hung with leaves of
some sort, strongly reminding one of
the savory bunches of herbs displayed
in a market house iu Autumn, or n
green grocer's sign in hucklo-berry
time. Perhaps the same accident
that severed the handle of the gridiron,
also fractured tho lower part, for we
notice that it is there skewered by
two arrows, pointing in opposite,
directions. The motto, "in God we
trust," is very opportune, for the
inventor of this coin may rest assured
that the devil will never forgive him
for such an abortion.
WHITE TENANTE V.-Several gentle?
men of our acquaintance, who leased
lands to tenants from the upper
Counties, have made contracts with
them for another year, says the Selma
Messenger, and are desirous of pro?
curing more labor of the same kind.
On this subject, the editor of the
Livingston Journal, who is au intelli?
gent witness on the value of white
labor, makes the following remarks:
"We infer firom the experience of
our planters in making the present
crop, that they would willingly try
the experiment of white labor, if an
opportunity were afforded. We are
so well satisfied . >f the superiority of
that kind of labor over what is now
employed, tb; J it seems useless to
argue it. The diff?rence between in?
telligent white labcr and that of free
negroes is just the differ, nee be?
tween a rational human being and a
machine-and that machine ono that
cannot be controlled at will, lt is
the difference between mind and
matter."
It is the intention of "Brick"
Pomeroy to issue "one edition of a
Democratic blister for the backs of
bondholders, Union haters, nigger
lovers, and such props of the God and
morality party, to be called the Great
Campaign Democrat." It is to con?
tain some of " Brick's" famous solilo?
quies, pictures of the blessings of
Abolitionism, fgumeuts, etc.; its
"aim will be to infuse pluck into
Democrats, to open the eyes of twx
payers, to lash the scoundrels over
the course this fall, lt will be a blis?
ter, a plaster of potash, an antidote
for puritanism;" and altogether it w iii
be one of the deadliest shafts wielded
against the radicals during the com?
ing great political campaign.
While recognizing the liberty of
the people to carry weapons, as set
forth in the bill of rights, Governor
Throckmort?n, of Texas, recom?
mends the checking of the growing
abuse of the privilege, by the levy of
a tax upon all weapons carried about,
the person, failure to pay which shall
justify their seizure. This not to
apply to persontrliving on th? fron?
tier, or to travelers.
Two ladies were discovered in an
attempt to smuggle under their skirts
a youth fourteen years of age, in the
cars from Hartford to New Haven.

forced off, and instead of a torpedo,"
there lay the harmless but lifeless
body of a duck. In fact, the Presi?
dent's gift was a dead duck.

Some twenty negroes recently in?
sisted mi riding in the ladies' ear of
un Ohio Railroad. Tho brakesman
refusing to admit them, they said,
"They bought first-class tickets, and
they were determined to have their
seats whar dey choosed to take 'em
peaceably if they could, but forcibly
if dey must," und attempted to force j
the door. A light ensued, in which
the darkies were worsted.

of the (lt h of August, by M. Stephau,
Director of the Marseilles Observa?
tory. This discovery, which brings
the number of asteroids np to eighty
eight, was made with the new tele?

hitherto untried principle. The pla?
net luis the appearance of a star of the
nindi magnitude.
A young Louisville clerk induced a
respectable Hoosier girl to run away
from her home and go over to Louis?
ville, where he promised to marry
her. He kept lier at ii boarding
house two or three days, and made
dishonorable proposals to her. She
got him into the parlor, locked the
door and cowhided him within an
inch of his life, whereat the people
said good for the Hoosier girl.

? leeted, in the right arm, near th.- elbow;
? with small and bony arms; wore dark coat
j and dark lin? :: pants. The above murderer
i is a notorious scoundrel, ami has recently,

I engaged in various other bloody outrages.
The above reward will be paid for his
