^POI?TENESS.-A young lady was
sweeping the street with a trail two
yards long. A youug man stepped
upon it, partly tearing it from her
waist. She turned shortly upon him
and said, "Sir, you are a rowdy."
Ho retorted, "Madam, you are a
dowdy." "If I was a mau, I would
thrash you," said she. "If you were
pretty, I would kiss yon," said he.
"This is insufferable," said the lady,
gathering up her calico ami turning
ti way. "That is true," he replied,
"whether your remark applies to
yourself, your dress or the weather."
A member of the Legislature, who
indulged in afternoon naps, request?
ed his friend to awake him when the
Lumber Act came up. He omitted,
by forgetfulness, but accidentally
gave him a jog as the House was dis?
cussing a bill to prevent fraud.
Sleepyhead started, rubbed his eyes,
aud exclaimed: "Mr. Speaker, a
word or two on that bill, for moro
than one-half of my constituents get
their living in no other way."
A little girl, after having been to
church, was very fond of preaching
to her dolls. Her mother overheard
her, ono day, reproving one for being
so wicked. "Oh, you naughty, sin?
ful child," she said, shaking its waxen
limbs, "you'll just go to that place of
brimstone and molasses, and you
won't burn up, you'll just sizzle."

committed near thc town of Chester,
S. C., on Hie night of tho 22d July, 1866,
upon the bodv of mv brother, ALEXAN?
DER D. WALKER. Two of the murderers
(negroes) have been arrested. The third,
a white man. known as BILL MORRIS,
alina CHAS. DEREM, alias WYLIE MOR?
RIS, is still at large, and is described ns
follows: Tall, spare-made man; grey eyes,
I of a peculiar look; short, thick nose; low
forehead; round, lean face; somewhat
hump-shouldered: black bair, with a few
grey hairs; about thirty-seven years old;
weighs about 140 pounds; spealcs slowly,
and, when speaking, twists fus mouth to
thc right side; heavy, dark beard; baa
been wounded, as well a? can be recol?
lected, in the right arni, near the elbow;
with small and bony arms; wore dark coat
! and dark linen pants. The above murderer
is a notorious - oundrel, and has recently,
j in connection ah a band of negroes, been
engaged in vari ais other bloody outrages.

: to bia apprehension.
