boldly usurps the Government, and
claims to rule the country by its own
mere will."
MB HOLDEN AND THE CONSTITUTION.
We begin to think, seriously, that if
the new constitution has been defeat?
ed, it is very much owing to Mr.
Holden's advodiioy of it. A friend
informs us that a precinct in an ad?
joining county, where the vote was
almost unanimous against, tho inquiry
of the people generally was: "Will
Holden vote for it?" They acknow?
ledge that they had not saen the pa?
pers, nor heard much about it, and
really did not know how to vote, but
thought they could determine how to
vote right, if they knew how Holden
stood. They were told that Mr.
Holden was for the new- constitution.
That was enough-many exclaiming,
"Well, if Holden is for it, I'm against
it.-Raleigh Sentinel.
A quarry of variegated marble ha?
been discovered in Alabama, near the
Chattanooga Railroad. A specimen
has been exhibited in Nashville, and
is found to sustain a higher polish
than the marble of East Tennessee.

AMOST DIABOLICAL MURDER was
committed n*ar tho town of Chester,
S. C.", on the night of the 22d July, 1866,
upon tho body of my brother, ALEXAN?
DER D. WALTER. Two of the murderers
(negroes) have been arrested. Tho third,
a white mao, known as BiLL MORRIS,
alias CHAS. DEREM, alias WYLIE MOR?
RIS, is still at largo, and ie described as
follows: Tall, spare-made man; grey eyes,
of a peculiar look; short, thick nose; low
forehead; round, lean* face; (somewhat
hump-shouldered; black hair, with a few
grey hairs; about thirty-seven rears old;
weighs about 140 pounds; speaks slowly,
and, when speaking, twists his inouth to
the right Bide; heavy, dark beard; has
been wounded, as well as can bc recol?
lected, in thc right arm, near tho elbow;
with small and bony army; wore dark coat
and dark linen pants. The above murderer
is a notorious scoundrel, and has recently,
in connection with a band of negroes, been
engaged in various other bloody outrages.
Tho above reward will be paid for his
arrest, or for any information that will lead
to his apprehension.

Carolina Railroad wa? taken up. its
direction changed, and timber piled near
it, at Cornwell 4 Turn-out, in Chester Dis?
trict, on Sunday .night, thc l!)th inst., utter
the Night Passenger Train from Columbia
had passed up, with evident purpose to
destroy tho Down Passenger Train that
night. Fortunately, an irregular train was
precipitated into this trap, and seriously
damaged, but no lives lost.
This work waa evidently done by Mime
fiend who understood the best means to
accomplish his inhuman purpose, ami thc
running of tho trains on the Road.
A reward of FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS
will be paid by tho Company for thc con?
viction of tho person or parties guilty of
tili? outragous act.
