few days since returned from Bran?
don, Vt., -where he has paid a short
visit While there, he examined the
famous ice well, so-called, about
which there has been so much dis?
cuss; among the sarans. The well
is of * e ordinary size, and forty-four
feet in depth. At the depth of
thirty-nine feet, ice is formed on the
sides of the well, and from that
dt vn, the water is of the usual
temperature of ice water, and no
matter .how the thermometer stands
upon the surface of the earth, even if
it indicates 100 in the shade, this
never varies, and the ice is always
there. In the -winter the coating is
thicker.. No other -well in the vicinity
has this feature, and the cause is not
easily explained.

Arrest the Murderers !
AMOST DIABOLICAL MURDER was
committed near the town of Chester
S. C., on thc night of the 22d July, hS(!G,
upon tho body of my brother, ALEXAN
DER D. WALKER. The murderers-two
in number-were negroes, and are de?
scribed by thoac who saw them as follows:
Ono, copper color, rather stout, live feet
ten inches high, weighs about 1G5 pouuds,
light clothes, 23 or 24 years old; light drab
hat, good shoes, had black carpet-bag.
Tho other, biack complexion, slender,
Ave feet eight inches high, high cheek?
bones, quick of speech; dark elothos, blacl
hat, good shoes, 23 or 25 years old, weighs
about 110 pounds.
From tho body of their victim was takci
a watch, open-faced, gold case and dial
Engb'fih lever. James Moss, maker, Liver
pool, No. 5,208, with gold fob chain, three
or four strands curb, a gold locket, aeal
and one or two plain rings attached; anil
from bia dwelling house, after the commis
sion of tho murder, one Colt's repeate
five-shooter, and several articles of cloth
ing.
Tho above negroes were each armed with
a pistol, and said they wero traveling with
a Mr. Owens, of Spartanburg.
Tho above reward will be paid for their
arrest, or for any information that will load
to the apprehension of the perpetrators of
so brutal and atrocious a murder.
