A GOOD JOKE ON THE Doo.-A
good joko was perpetrated on a large
s zeil <log a day or two ago, which we
t'.iiuk is worthy nf record. It hap
p ned in this wise:
On? of oar most esteemed and
highly influential citizensis the happy
owner of ? large dog, noted for his
good natu.e rather than his gotd
looks-tho dog, wo mean. The
owuer, thinkiug to -surprise and
nuuoy the canine, procured a largo
mirror and placed it in front of his
dogship, who commenced to growl
au3 show his teeth afc the sudden ap?
pearance of his counterpart. The dog
flew-around, barking, growling and
showing his teeth, unconsciously
contributing to the enjoyment of his
master. It was grand sport; the dog
w is so bewildered nt the sw?deu ap?
pearance and disappearance of the
apparition, his master was delighted,
and to crown the joke, exclaimed,
"Sickern!" The dog "sicked," and
the mirror and the other dog disap?
peared at the same time, and the joke
on the dog (?) - Grand Rapids; Eagle.
THE .AUTHOBSHE? O?- JUNTOS.
Among the many singular revelations
made during the recent trial of the
royal scandal case in London, is one
which, if it bc true, clears up the long
disputed point as to the authorship
of the letters of Jnriius. They were
written by. Dr. Wilmot, his grand?
daughter asserts, to obtain redress
from George III, who, writhing
under their sharp lash, was induced
to sign certain certificates testifying
to the marriage of Olive Wilmot and
the birth of her child. The youthful
Olive made the discovery, accidental- I
ly, when she was bul fourteen years j
old. She chanced to talco from her ?
grand-father's library some loose
sheets of old manuscripts to scribble
and draw upon, and they were found
to bo some of the letters of Junius
ALWAYS IN SESSION.-There was a '
very irascible old gentlemen who
formerly held the position of Justice
of the Peace in ono of our cities.
Going down thc main street one day,
one of the boys spoke to him without
coming up to his honor's idea of
deference. "Young mau, I fine you
five dollars for contempt of Court."
"Why, Judge,"' said tho offender;
"you are not in session." "This
Court." responded tho Judge, tho?
roughly irritated, "is always in ses?
sion, and consequently always au
object of contempt!" There was dis?
order iu court as his honor passed on.
AMAUROSIS AND LOSS OP MEMORY.
Twenty-eight years of observation
have convinced Dr. Litchel that few
persons can continue to consume
(smoke) daily twenty grammes of
tobacco without their vision or
memory becoming impaired. There
are many smokers, ho urges, who
may resist these effects, but thc per?
nicious consequences, though slow in
manifesting themselves, are, however,
none the less certain.
"Do you pronounce the letter Z,
see or zed?" asked a punning United
States Senator, of a member of thc
