The Philadelphia Ledger, speaking
of the increased pay of members-of
Congress, says: "We are unable to

Business, in Alexandria, has fallen
off so seriously that over three-quar?
ters of the business places are closed,
and there is hardly a street but what
is covered with growing grass. The
high rate of corporation taxes is the
chief evil.
A shop, in Baltimore, was fired, on
Thursday, by the agency of a warped
pane of glass in a window, which
acted as a convex lens, and, concen?
trating the sun's rays upon a pile of
combustible material, caused it to
take fire.
