A SUBSTITUTE FOB AN lea PITCHER.
-People who have no ice pitchers
wilt be glad to know that there is a
very simple method of keeping ice
water for a long time in. a common
pitcher. Between two sheets of paper
Elace a layer of cotton batting about
alf an inch in thickness, and form a
cylinder by fastening the ends of the
paper and batting together. Then
ROW or paste a crown on one end, so
as to make a box the shape of aatove

should be made large enough to go
entirely over the pitcher, 6o that the
open end will rest upon the 'table or
sideboard, and titus exclude the air.
Any one trying this simple method of
keeping ice water cool, will ho
astonished at tho length of time it
will preserve. the coldness of the
water.
An exchange says that when apicco
of iron is thrown into a trough where
chickens drink water, they are not
affected with chicken cholera. A
gentleman who has tried it says that
his chick ona are thriving, while fho?e
of his neighbors are dying daily. AS
the chicken cholera is raging to some
extent throughout the country, it
might bo well to try iL Iron will not
