The two latter were the members
recently arrested. Speaker Heiskell,
of the House, was relieved from duty
for the remainder of the term, at his
own request, and Judge Norman was
elected speaker pro tem.
EIGHT DAYS FROM NEW YORK TO
IRELAND.-For the first time in the
history of steam navigation, a screw
steamer has made the voyage from
. New York to the Irish coast iu eight
days. The fortunate vessel was the
City of Paris, Captain James Ken?
nedy, of the Inman line. Her
average daily run was a little over 321
miles.
Tho murderers of Dr. Webb and
son, at Little Rock, Ark., a few weeks
since, have been arrested. The gold
watch taken from Dr. Webb, was
recognized, and betrayed them. On
this a colored ostler and two colored
soldiers, confessed that they commit?
ted the bloody deed. It is about time
for Congress to pass a "Freedman's
Murder's Bureau bill.
Prince Alfred, of England, it is
said, has declined being made Duke
of York, as has hitherto been the
practico with tho second son of the
monarch, for fear that tho creditors
of the late Duke should sends iu their
still unpaid bills to him, as successor
to the title.
It is proposed by the Johnson Club
iu Tennesseo to invite the President
to visit that State as early after tho
adjournment of Congress as con?
venient, but it is not thought pro?
bable that the Executive will accept

Mrs. John A. Cobb, widow of the
late Col. John A. Cobb and mother
of Gen. Howell and T. R. R. Cobb,
and Maj. JohnB. Cobb, died on Sun?
day, in Atlanta, at the residence of
her son-in-law, Col. Glenn.

was horribly murdered on Saturday
evening, near her residenoo in West

Something Wrong.
The New York fferafr/, of the 24th,
says:

from Washington that a discrepancy,
amounting to some 30,000,000, hos
been discovered in balancing tho ac?
counts of Judge Chose while Secre?
tary of the Treasury-or rather that
his accounts do not balance by that
amount. If this report be true, is it
not strange that the discrepancy was
not discovered before? What is the
reason his successors, Mr. Fessenden
and Mr. McCulloch, have had no?
thing to say on this subject? There
is a rumor that Mr. Fessenden re?
signed on account of tho muddle he
found tho Treasury Department in
when he entered upon the discharge
of his duties os its chief. Tho more
he endeavored to straighten matters,
the moro complicated he found them,
and he abandoned their solution in
despair. Mr. McCulloch has been
instrumental in doing some good to
the country, and in giving some fat
jobs to outside brokers and jobbers;
but he also has failed to expose ar ex?
plain this discrepancy cf 30,000,000
during Chase's direction of the de?
partment. All this is very strange.
No one will, of course, attempt to
ascribe to Judge Chase any improper
uso of the funds thus unaccounted
for; but, as showing tho looso mau
ner in which our national financial
affairs have been conducted, discre?
pancies like these demand immediate
investigation at tko bands of Con?
gress. Why has this not been done?
Tlio Government lost 500,000 by the
failure of a national bank in which
Government funds were deposited,
and tho army paymaster by whose
authority the money was placed there
has beeu cashiered, fined and impri?
soned, and four others, who testified
in his: behalf, have been dismissed
the service in consequence. Why is
it that so rigorous and merciless a
prosecution should occur in one de?
partment of the Government for
500,000 lost, w*ien 30,000,000 remain
unaccounted for in another depart?
ment? Congress should look into
this matter without delay. The en?
tire management of our national
financial affairs during the rebellion,
and up to the present time, demands
sharp and unpartisan investigation.

the German Revolutionary Commit?

The organization has issued the fol?
lowing call:
In old Germany, a struggle hos
been commenced, which, though it
was begun in the furtherance of dy?
nastic interests, will doubtless lead to
unity and republican freedom in
Germany, if the American Germans
will do their duty. Therefore a union
for German unity and freedom luis
been formed, which should increase
in members without delay. All who
desire that the blessings of freedom
and unity which we enjoy here should
be enjoyed in old German fatherland,
are requested to join this union for
German freedom and unity, by sub?
scribing their names, lidding their ad?
dresses, and voluntary contributions
should be handed to the distributors
of the call.
Attached to this call is an extract of
the manifesto of the German Revo?
lutionary Committee in London, in
which it is stated "that no nation in
the world has a better basis of repub?
lican operations" than Germany in
its emigrated population in the United
States. Whero six or seven millions
of Germans reside in a free State,
they must feel that it is their duty to
remember their native country in a
manner becoming republicans-by
aiding iu a liberal spirit the move?
ment in behalf of freedom.
