THE FREEDMEN*?K BUREAU AGENTS I
IN TEXAS.-Our advices from Texas
are to the effect that the outrages upon j
the negroes and tho corruptions of!
the agents of the Freedmen's Bureau
have exceeded anything that has been
discovered in any other localty. The
investigation there bids fair to un- ?
earth transactions -which -will throw j
the operations of the agents in North |
Carolina all in the shade and make ?
the latter appear honest by jyny of '
contrast. Texas is so far away from |
the national capital that it seems that j
the men in charge there imagined !
that they could do just as they pleased
without being found ont. But the ?
investigations of the Special Commis?
sioners reveal most extensivo frauds,
even to the extent of kidnapping ne?
groes and other transactions of an
equally corrupt character. The public j
may very soon look for fur more ex- i
traordinary developments from that
quarter than anything which has yet
appeared in connection with the ope
rations of this Bureau. It is this !
kind of work that the radicals in.'
Oongress are trying to defend and ;
continue for three or four years more, :
aud to such men a~ chose who aro en- '
gaged in this business that they desire
to give increased power and addi- j
tional facilities to abuso the negro :
and speculate in his necessities. The
Pres; dent should make short work of
the bill before him, aud veto it j
without delay. There is no telling
the extent of the abuso and corrup?
tion that will flourish among the I
agents of thc Freedmen's Bureau, if I
the bill becomes a law. In the de?
velopments which have already takeu
place we have seen sufficient to cou- (
demn the whole system, and wo are
promised additional evidence from
Texas which will no doubt remove j
even the last chance for their friends
to defend the action of the agents of
the Bureau.-New York Herald.
THE NEWEST STATE.-Nebraska is |
no longer a Territory. At the elec?
tion last month she adopted a State
Constitution, (by the small majority
of 100,) and on Wednesday her
Legislature elected Major-General
John M. Thayer and F. W. Tipton
to represent her in the United States
Senate. Nebraska was organized as
a Territory in 185?, by the celebrated
Kansas-Nebraska Act.
A letter from Porto Rico states that
the slave population is rapidly di?
minishing by manumission. The
sugar and co?ee crops on the bland
are not more than half thc- average.
