Tho j evidence shows that the young lady, | for a "somewhat" impudent answer j when reprimanded for whispering, j was ordered into a recitation room, j where twenty blows with a strap were 1 administered by the lady assistant, j while another held her hand over her mouth to stop her screams. During the punishment, the master came in and assisted in holding her, mid a piano was playing to drown the noise. But the most singular circumstance connected with this outrage is the vote of the school committee, that the whipping of a young lady, sixteen years of age, "is in accordanco with the rules for thc government of thc public schools at Cambridge. "- There? fore, the committee declined to take notice of this case; but it promises to be brought to the notico of tho grand jury. Meanwhile, had this punish? ment been inflicted upon some tough, old and recently reconstructed darkey in Mississippi, the whole State of Massachusetts would have been horri? fied and indignant. m The Now York Herald says: "It was reported, j-esterday?. that two prominent members of the Union Club, of this city, had left town for the purpose of engaging in a deadly conflict, according to the tliirty-nine articles of the Southern code of honor. The affair has been kept a profound secret, and no more is known than that the two reported principles are absent from their places of business and homes." Whereupon, the Iii dimond Times says: "It will turn out, we predict, that these men have not gone to fight any duel, but have run off with some? body's money." DEATH AX THE COMMUNION TABLE. The Syracuse (N. Y.j Journal relates the particulars of the death of an aged lady, which occurred in that city a few Sabbaths ago. Mrs. Sarah Higgins, aged seventy-eight years, went to thePark Presbyterian Church, attended by her daughter. She took her seat, and while the pastor was reading the opening hymn, "Rock of Ages," Mrs. H. fell dead from her seat, without a moment's warning that the messenger was near. WHY A DUNKING MAN MARRIED. - The friends of a celebrated wit-ex? pressed some surprise that, at his age, and with his fondness for the bottle, he should have thought it ne? cessary to marry. "A wife was ne? cessary," he said; "my acquaintances began to say that I drank too much for a single man."
