Radical Cona lat ency.
The Bichmond Times says: Per-'
sistent kindness will overcome and
win the honest hearts and warm with
affection the fiercest bosoms, how?
ever determined to be hostile. The
Southern people, when they re?
nounced their dream of independ?
ence, might easily have been won by
a little kindness and forbearance.
President Johnson understood this,
and he inaugurated a policy which,
had it been adopted by Congress,
would soon have bound tip the
wounds of the Union, and have
started both sections on a new career
of love and prosperity. But the po- j
polar representatives of the Northern |
people in Congress seem to have !
adopted the idea that hate, and the ;
exercise of power, directed by hate,
can cement ?eluotant communities
under a Government which, by every
republican doctrine, should repose
upon the consent of the governed.
Into what strange inconsistencies
men are driven by their political ne-.
cessities and love of power. During
thc war, it was proclaimed every- j
where at the North that the great !
body of the Southern people were \
loyal Unionists, who were kept under
bj a military despotism; hence all the .
cohorts of radicalism were mustered
for the relief of the millions of Union
men who, though in a majority, were
ruled over by Jeff. Davis. But, be?
hold, when the war is over, we are
told that the Unionists at the South
are so weak and scarce thai it is un?
safe for loyal men to live here! What
has become of these Union masses
who, as the Northern people were ;
made to believe, only waited the ad?
vance and protection of the Federal
armies to throw Davis and Lee over?
board? The hypocrites and impos?
tors, who are playing every game to
keep power, could see Union men
when we had none, and now, when
all of us are Union and loyal men,
they cannot see it, because it does not
meet their purposes that we should be
so considered. They blow hot and
cold to perfection. When we wanted
to get out of the Union, they would
not let'us, and now when we agree to j
come back, they say we shall not do
so. They at one time maintained j
that we had not left thsm, and could !
not do so by secession;but when they .
find that we have come to their opi- j
nion, it is forthwith discovered that
we have been out, and we are denied
permission to get back 1 It appears, j
then, that we did secede and break up
the Union after all, hence the neces?
sity of "reconstruction," which means
putting up something which has been
pulled down.
These radicals are odd fish, and j
they get off their platform whenever i
they find that you stand on it with I
them. Their paths are not those of !
wisdom, nor their ways those of i
peace.
One "Mr. Hamlin" has been vic?
timizing the bankers of Selma, Ala?
bama, to the tune of $10,000. The
ftoonndrel has just been arrested at
Mapleeville and put in irons.
