TEA?-A CHINESE SEC HEX.-Recent?

that another man was extensively
engaged in the manu fae tu re of wheat
bran tea and in buying up damaged
cargoes of tea and coloring it with
Paris%reen. The Board's inspector
visited the place against which com?
plaint had been entered, and the fol?
lowing extract froth his report, which
was presented at a meeting of tho
Boara of Health, shows the result of
his investigations:
?.Henry Joseph Jameson's business
is that of buying tea damaged by
shipwreck and by water at fires. Af?
ter submitting it to a process by
which it is deprived of its damaged
appearance, he puts it into tho mar?
ket. The damaged tea is first placed
in a cistern of cold water, where it is
allowed to remain several hours, so
that the saltish or other foreign taste
which it may have acquired may be
removed; it is then dried and sifted;
tho .coloring matter is then added,
and the tea removed to a revolving
barrel, where the color is thoroughly j
mixed. The tea is then moistened,
and dried and sent to market. The
proprietor informed me that he paid
a Chinaman $1,000 for the secret of
coloring, and he declined to impart
the secret unless peremptorily order?
ed to do so. He assured me, how?
ever, that no poison is employed in
the process, and invited the mo^i
rigid tests. I took specimens and i
tested them, with tho following re?
sult: Tho coloriug matter, tested for
copper, yielded none. Marsh's test
yielded no trace of arsenic. it is '
composed of sulphate of lime mixed j
with some organic substance and a ?
small amount of iron, probably an
impurity of the gypsum. The tea
maliced 'colored,' digested iu water j
and tested for copper, yielded none. I
The filtered liquid has a distinct blue i
tint, probably imparted to it by the 1
solution of tho organic matter.
Tested for chloride of sodium, only
frocesof -it were discovered. Some
green tea from a respectable np-town I
grocery, submitted to similar tests, j
yielded both sulphate and carbonate
of lime. In these investigations I j
had the services of Dr. Arthur Du- j
berceau, formerly assistant to Pro
fessor Doremus in the New York
Medical College. Concerning the 1
accusation of using Paris green or
other mineral poisons in the coloring
of his tea, it is my opinion that the

A PATENT VACCINATOK.-We leam, i
from the Scientific American, that
Henry Minton, M. D., contrary to
the practice of regular physicians, j
whose practice it is to give to the j
world the benefit of then: inventions
and discoveries, last week, procured ;
a patent for a vaccinator. The in- ;
s tr u men t consists in the arrangement
of a puncturing tube in a barrel,
which contains a spring, in combina- |
tion with a plunger, passing through
the puncturing tube, and provided
with a momentum spring, so that, i
when the puncturing tube is filled '
with the vaccination matter and drawn I
back in the barrel, against the action
of the spring contained therein, and !
then released, after the barrel has .
been placed on the spot where the
vaccinating matter is to be intro- j
duced, tho tube punctures tho skin I
and the plunger flies out. overcoming j
the power of the momentum spring,
and causes the matter contained in
the puncturing tube to discharge into
the wound opened by said tube.
