The odious maa of the ('our?fir
?corns- to relish nothing better than a
"crusade against tilting hoops,"
which cause, ho asserts, has been
- strangely mistaken. Commenting on
a feminine plea for their grace and
utility, he remarks: "It is not be?
cause ladies show their legs, for it is
habitually done by the womou of
* many nations, and is not necessarily
i udelicate. But the tilting hoop malves
a pretense of covering the legs, as
though one should say, 'I am show?
ing you what I ought not to.' If the
ladies will wear short dresses, instead
of long ones looped up and held but,
sensible men will find no fault. We
are glad to learn Eastern ladies wear
pantalets; our ladies might very pro?
perly adopt the habit. " Now, ladies,
isn't this a pretty tirade against us?
And, as our sex prevents us from
taking tangible satisfaction by giving
him a pummeling, let us seize and
hold him by every available button
hole, and pour into his care such a
volley of anathemas as ho never be?
fore heard, and give him the benefit
of tliat "organ" of speech which has
been proclaimed we possess to an un?
limited degreo; let us give one unani?
mous shout of indignation ; confuse,
deafen, maddon liim with the melli?
fluous epithets, "brute," "monster,"
"fiend incarnate!" How dare you
insinuate that the ladies of this city
wear no pantalets? How could you,
sir, thus boldly accuse us df such an
unheard-of indelicacy? Shameful,
ridiculous; 'tis a monstrous libel, an
infamous misrepresentation, au un?
pardonable non-appreciation of our
be-rnffled, bo-fluted uuder-gear. It
is false and base, and we -won't bear '
it tamely-that we won't; and, if you
don't take it back, you will not soon ;
again have the pleasure of acknow?
ledging a beautful bouquet from a
lady friend. We prefer to send our I
flowers whence come our compli- 1
ments. Your style of returning com- j
piiments don't seem to prevail among :
intelligent people.
We advise you, the next windy day, !
to rub up your specs, sit down fair :
and square at the window of your :
sanctum, (where you are sure to be ;
seen on windy days,) and do not pre- ;
tend to "ignoro the fact" of the ex?
istence of some of the finest bandi- i
work in the way of "frills and edg- j
ings." Any one but an obdurate,
captious editor, of your species,
would pronounce them faultless; and
then, sensible men never find fault
with a well-dressed lady at all, and .
do not consider a subject to call
forth ugly criticisms. Wo will not j
wear short dresses until it is decreed
by fashion or custom to do so. You
would be the first to open a battery j
of censure on our appearance in the
streets in that style, and "bloomer
costume" is not generally in favor.
We will persist in wearing our dresses
long in the drawing-room, for its
gracefulness, and looped up in the
street, for its neatness and conve?
nience, which latter style we think a
great improvement on all the ' 'sweep- \
iug-the-street system" which pre- I
vailed formerly, and created ridicule !
and rebuke to an alarming extent.
And os for the "tilters," they are
quite indispensable, and we will have
our skirts held out by them for all
the "likes o' you."
If it shocks your sense of propriety
to see our "pretty gaiters" and "lisle
thread hose," don't look higher so
pertinaciously, to let your optics de?
ceive you and acenso us so outrage- j
ously. Pull down your blue shades i
and be sure you don't peep out when
high winds prevail. We did not dress j
our pedal extremities with immacu
late hose and high-heeled boots for
your dull eyes to squint at, nor for
Hie crowd of loafers who stare us out
of countenance and "out of gait" at
the street corners. We dress to look
neatly and feel comfortably, with a
regard to prevailing modes, as every I
lady should. We dress to please, and i
feel sure we receive the just appre?
ciation of all well-bred gentlemen, j
who make us feel our efforts aro not .
' 'labor lost. " We have heard enough ;
about bonnets, "water-falls" and "tilt
ing hoops," and we think it high
time to put it down; and Mr. Editor
of the Cour/er will yet live to learn,
as many have before, that an attempt
to reform dress is futile, and we j
would recommend silence to you j
when again you think of occupying
the questionable position of inspect
ing and recording what ladies "don't j
wear under their crinoline," or you I
will hear again from "an enraged re- I
dresser of wrongs."
