that city, chronicles another:
A meeting of tho Fourth Presby?
terian Church, at Franklin Square,
took place last night, at the request
of the pastor. Kev. Dr. J. A. Lefe?
vre. The congregation was large,
and Dr. Lefevre spoke of the action
of the General Assembly of tho
Church from 1845 up to the late ses?
sion. Da 1845, ho said, the Assembly
passed resolutions declaring that
those who taught abolitionism taught
a doctrine opposed to the Bible, and
up to 1861 that sentiment prevailed.
At the last named date, the body
took up political subjects. A protest
was theu made by about one-fourth
of the Assembly, and among the
signers of that protest were Rev. Drs.
John C. Backus and Cyrus Dickson,
of this city. De read the protest to
the congregation, lu 1862 and 1S63,
that action was affirmed, and slavery
was made a test of membership. But
the crowning act was that of the late
session, which requires every pastor
to examine persons from tho seceded
States applying for membership, and
if such shall not declare their love
ior the Government ?. f the United
States, they must be excluded from
the communion of the Church. That
action was unconstitutional, and op?
posed to Ute spirit of the Old School
Presbyterian Church, and he would
rather obey God than man. For ten
years he had endeavored to teach his
people the doctrine of the Bible, and
now he could teach no other. He had
been tempted .to leave them by the
offer of a pleasant and profitable
charge, but if . they accorded with
him, he would love to remain with
them. He should, however, shortly
dissolve his connection with the Gea- j
eral Assembly, and hoped on Wednes- :
day night next to hear the decision
of the congregation. There seemed
to be but one feeling among those
present, and that was in accord witli
those of the pastor. On Wednesday 1
night next, there will be another
meeting, when the Church will de- j
cide whether to hold to the General
Assembly or go with Dr. Lefevre.

fore, but the heavy fall in prices will j
have a serious effect. At present the i
price of cotton has fallen to eight
piastres per oke, the rate some times
ranging as high as twenty-three
piastres. Varions circumstances com?

state of things, the monetary crisis
and the foll caused by increased
imports from America being the
principal causes.
