About a year ago, au elaborate de?

of Dr.. Solomon Andrew's projected
flying ship, then building at Perth
Aruboy. Since then, the enterprise,
following all improvements, has taken

several months has been undergoing
preparations at the corner of Hons
- ton and Greene streets, having passed

pany, of which Dr. Andrews, the in?
ventor, is president.
Yesterday afternoon at 4 p. m., all
being in readiness, four gentlemen

dinous mass of humanity that darken
the streets appeared as Lilliputs, sur?
rounded by houses of equal minia?
ture extent, each intent upon his
petty'task of pleasure.
The island" and its suburbs lay
stretched in masslike distinctness,
through which rivers and streets
threaded their sinuous way, -with au
effect to which distance lent enchant?
ment that converted edifies! gross?
ness into outlined beauty, and toned
down deformities to a varied and sug?
gestive smoothness and cleanliness ns
pleasing to an artist as it would have
been satisfactory to the argus-eyed
Board of Health.
For the first five minutes the ship
drifted steadily in a North-easterly
course, but, a little ballast cast ont,
she instantly and gracefully obeyed
the direction of the rudder, and was
headed in a South-westerly line along
which, though under a minimum of
gas, she shot at an undeviating un
swaying rate of less titan three mi?
nutes to the mile. As the trip was
urely experimental, the aeronauts
cpt afloat- no longer than -would
assure the practical success of the
und cr taking, and suggest any needed
improvements and alterations advisa?
ble to the more complete outfit of the
flying conqueror of the atmosphere
and the annihilator of current. A
further lengthening of tho "jerostat"
or gas-containing section, of the ma?
chine to thirty feet, so as to secure a
flight angle ol fifteen degrees, and a
stronger stiffening of the rudder,
were the only additional measures
recommended by the results of tito
trip. These will bo immediately ef?
fectuated.
While in the car, tho wind blowing
quite freshly, came almost directly
athwart the faces of the voyagers,
and pieces of paper cast on the
bosom of the air were wafted in a
course contrary to that pursued by
the machine, thus conclusively prov?
ing that, unlike baboons, tho "JKreon"
can proceed if need bo, against, and
not slavishly, with the wind, as tho
former always do.
After being supra nimbos for about
twenty-five minutes, tho docile and
beautiful steam-winged bird was suc?
cessfully persuaded to pay a terrestial
visit to Astoria, where both her high?
ness and her privileged masculino
convoys wero received with surprise
and welcome acclamations by the as?
tonished denizens, and whence, gath?
ering in her plumage, the Queen of
the Air allowed herself to be borne
in a plebian cart to her resting-place
in the metropolis. Other and more
extended flights are in design during
the snmmer weeks.
The initial and gratifying success
of this measure is tho reward of
years of thought, toil, expense, and
intelligent scientific research on tho
part of Dr. Andrews, in the face of
skepticism, opposition and red-tape
indifference, and assures him not
only recognition and peerhood among
the foremost inventor? of the age,
but we hope a return of substantial
results that will bo none tho less de?
served because wholly a secondary
consideration to his mind.
Lovers can henceforth soar actually
as near Heaven as their aspirations
can carry them already, -while ?bove
tho terrestrial grandeur and fashion
of Central Park pleasure parties can
partake of rarified sweets in ratified
atmosphere, and earthly items at a
stand-still, adventurous reporters will
make a raid for topics upon the now
explorable dominions of the "Prince
of the Power of tho Air."

happened to pick tip a copy of it, a
few months ago, which was peculiarly
"rich" iu vituperation, and scandal.
He took it to the White House, and,
in the coarse of an interview with
his Excellency, drew it from his pock?
et, with tim remark, "Now, Mr. l*re
ftideat, I'm going to test your dif?
ferent men hil and moral qualities.

Campbell then read an ar Molo en?
titled "Andrew Johnson and Thomas
[ Paine,*' written after the manner of

I Campbell.
" Well, it's uot bad." said Andy,
good humoredly.
I "Now," said Campbell, "I want
to test your patriotism." And he
read an article, showing that, as be?
tween Andy Johnson and Benedict

Campbell.
" Oh, it will do. This is a free
country, you know," smilingly re?
plied the President.

son," to the effect that tho betrayal

of his party by the latter.

"Well, I guess my shoulders are
broad enough to stand it." replied
his Excellency, not at all moved bf
displeasure.
"Now, hore comes the climax,"
said Campbell, aud began to read a
double-leaded editorial to the effect
that the Right Way would be circu?
lated through the agency of the Freed?

dent ?" inquired Campbell.
The President laughed, looked his
Ohio friend in tho eye, and said:
"Well, now, I don't mind the other

to him in that light. The President
finally took the paper and made some
notes on the margin of the order of
General Howord-since which time,
it is supposed, thc Freedmen's Bu?

under very trying circumstances. It
was a corn-colored tulle Pamela, with
a garland of green foliage, having,
here and there, a rosebud, while
sprigs of tho same were twisted in her
chignon under a very invisible net."

nakedness and famine staring him in
