AND FINANCIAL,. j GOLD AND COTTON.-Tho gold demand in New York does not seem to be groat, and there are indications that it will decline in price. Thc transactions in gold were very limited during the last day or two leas than $100,000 bavins been bought and sold in the open market. The Treasury, as wo have heretofore mentioned, has discon? tinued its sales, having made no salen since last Tuesday weok. The amount which was thrown in tho market during the fright of the European crisis baa pro? bably had a favorable effect upon the price of American cotton and securities abroad, and in that way lias been worth vastly more to the country tkau would have beeii the paltry gain which might, as things turned out, have boen secured by holding it back. A large portion of the "gold that has been snipped lo England during the panic was sent for tho necessary purposo of paying the interest on tho five-twenty bonds held abroad. This amount was $8,000,000 or $10,000.000. Tho rest wont to pay debts; and, after all, it does not appear that a sum uear equal to the whole amount which tho Treasury has lately sold-sav 30,000.000 -has gone out. Much of it still remains hore. Cotton has advanced five cents a pound recently, partly/ on account of the rise in gold, but chiefly from the fading prospest of that crop of 3,1)00.000 of bales which Mr. A. H. Stephen?, of Georgia, predicted, or even the 2,500,000 which the Treasury calculated upon. If tho crop should reach 1,!>00,000 bales (Mr. Truman) it would be surprising.
