A decided impression wa? made
upon the guests at a hotel table, at
Meridian, Mississippi, a few days
since, by a Union soldier, who rose
from his seat and kindly waited upon
a one-armed Confederate soldier, who
eould not help himself very well.
The attention was naturally and deli?
cately paid, and gratefully received.
The Meridian Messenger, which re?
lates the incident says : "The spirit
of that gray-haired Federal soldier
would do more towards reconciling
North and South than any spirit
which has ever invaded the room
where tho Committee of Fifteen
hold ther sessions, and pump all
sorts of stories out of all sorts of wit?
nesses."
We remember, at the battle of the
Wilderness, a gallant young Missis?
sippian had fallen, and at night, just
before burying him, there came a let?
ter from her he loved best. One of
tho group around his body, a minis?
ter, whose tenderness was womanly,
broke the ?ilent tearfulness with
which he saw tho dead letter; he
took it, and laying it on the heart of
him whose heroic heart was stilled,
said: "Bury it with him. He will seo
