who escaped was out hunting at tho time,
and saw the tight at a distance. Thc In?
dians, ?tts supposed, were admitted into
the flirt under the pretext of entering into
a treaty of poace. Brevet Major James F.
Midler was recently killed, at Cottonwood
Springs, by a party of Apaches.
Great excitement is occasioned by tho
discovery of rich gold mines on Clemens'

lt is reported that the United Slates sol?
diers at Fort Colville have deserted, takiug
arms with them. Their object is gold
hunting.
NEW YORK, May 8. -The Health Officer's
report shows three new eases of cholera
aiid three deaths since the last returns.
Sixty-five convalescents have been trans?
ferred from tho hospital ship to tho ship
Saratoga, leaving only forty-seven in tho
hospital. The total number of deaths by
cholera so far is fifty.
A New York paper has made a
discovery in respect to the emancipa?
tion of sin ves at the South. "Butter,"
says this sapient journalist, "will
hereafter be more abundantly made
by the Southern people." And he
thinks this desirable conclusion will
Erove to have been the result of abo
shing slavery. He does not tell how,
nor does he trace and define the con?
nection and relations of negroes and
butter; but he thinks it is plain, now
slavery is abolished, that butter will
be abundant among us. This cer?
tainly does not seem to be the case
yet awhile, though one would think
that as negroes have been free ever
twelve months, it was about time
that butter had come down ; but we
see no indications of it. On the con?
trary, this article of domestic con
P0|pti?n is higher than it has ever
mi known to be in this or any other
mmunity.
Surely, our butter philosopher had
not seen the Richmond papers, nor
read our market quotations, when he
advanced his novel theory. We say
that if the liberation of our slaves is
to cheapen butter, we want that result
now; but it seems to have cheapened
everything except that article.
It affords us much lively satisfac?
tion to find that there are people who
who take such deep and minute in?
terest in everything affecting our wel?
fare. While our great staples bf cot?
ton, sugar, rice, tobacco, turpentine
and lumber are receiving' attention,
it is consoling to reflect that our dairy
department is - not neglected, and
that we have a kind friend who is
always poking his nose into the cream
pots and milk-pans. We are truly
blessed in being able to .stimulate the
deepest solicitude in certain quarters
in regard to everything which con?
cerns us. But there is one tiling wo
must insist upon, and that is, that
our butter man shall enforco his the?
ory and make butter come* down.

is located in Alabama, four miles from
West Point.

Connected somewhat with the foregoing,
wc notice fears expressed iu somo of the
Northern journals of a collapse in financial
affairs North. Similar fears appear to pre?
vail in Kngland. A London correspondent
of the New York Neirs says:
"In commercial circles, thore has been a
shock, in consequence ??f the stoppage of
the Barned'ts Bank-Liverpool and Man?
chester. Tho bank became a joint stock
company about a year ago. Its nominal
caj ii tal was ?2^000,1)00, and that paid up was

heavy advances to cotton and iron specu?
lators, but principally to cotton speculat?
ors. Thc actual position is not vet known;
but it ts said that the losses in the year

in his speculation, because he has to deal

gets the credit; and if he loses, others
have to suffer."

enforced for the better government and

An Ordinance concerning the city police:
That it shall be the duty of the city police
to arrest all persons who shall behave in a
riotous or disorderly manner, or who shall
be found drunk in the streets of Columbia,
and carry such persons to tho guard-house.
An Ordinance to cloee barber-shops on
the Sabbath-day.
Au Ordinance for the better observance
of the Sabbath-day.
An Ordinance relative to the deposit of
tilth and trash in tho streets. . .
An Ordinance to regulate blacksmiths*
shops.
An Ordinance concerning dogs.
Au Ordinance concerning tire-arms.
An Ordinance concerning goats and
swine running at large.
An Ordinance concerning horses aud fast
driving in the streets.
An Ordinance regulating the granting of
licenses to retail spirituous liquors in the
citv of Columbia.
Au Ordinance concerning nuisances,
An Ordinance concerning streets, pave?
ments and shade trees.
An Ordinance requiring all male persons
between the ages of sixteen and fifty years
to work on the streets of the city; said
persons to be excused on payrueut of a
street-tax of three dollars.

between the ages of fifteen and sixty years
