JACOB'S LADDER-WHAT IT EM? BLEMATIZED.-Tf the reports wo hear be true, there ure some of tho earlier pupils of Granu Lecturer Drew, (whose work tho Graiul Lodge of New York declares tobo "standard,") who still, iu alludiug to Jacob's Lad? der in tho lecture, speak of it as ascending to Heaven. Such igno? rance is inexcusable ; and persons so transgressing ought to bo sent to a night school, insteaU of being per? mitted to expose their incapacity. If such persons aro possessed of any mind, they should remember that "the crowning of tho Lodge is tho celestial hemisphere;" and Free and Accepted Masons hope to arrive at the dominions of bliss by tho allego? rical assistance of Jacob's Ladder, one part of which rested on the earth, and the other extended to Heaven, on which the angels were ascending and descending; those ascending car? ried the obligations of gratitude to the Throne of Grace; those descend? ing dispensed the mercies of Provi? dence tn the whole creation. The Ladder, symbolical of the na? ture of man, his body earthly, but his soul. Heavenly and divine, was shown to Jacob in a vision, to remind him that he could never attain its summit but by a strict adherence to the laws aud commands of the Al? mighty-which would not only prove a source of earthly blessing, but enable him to return to his Father's House in peace and plenty; which, in process of time, was fully verified. In an emblematical sense, this Lad? der may be considered as resting on the Book of the Law; for by paying implicit confidence to the doctrines contained in that sacred volume, we are convinced by promises incontro? vertible, more solid than the earth, more permanent than the Heavens, that, by a steadfast faith in well? doing, a continual hope, and a heart replete with charity and benevolence, Ave shall finally attain the summit of that Ladder, metaphorically speak? ing, the dominions of bliss, and mansions of pure delight.
