Butler, in his recent speech before the
Legislature ut Harrisburg, uttered
this declaration :
"We had conquered the South

one would never yield unless some
of the leaders in the rebellion were
hung."

DOLEFUL PKOFIIECY. -Mr Banks,
(so-called General,) of Massachusetts,
- better know as Stonewall Jackson's
Commissary-in a speech on the
Pacific Railroad bill, (defeated a few
days since in Congress,) broke forth
thus:
"The first railway that wended its
sluggish and heavy foot over the
Rocky Mountains, with the unearthly
harmony of thc steam calliope, would
chant the requiem of the solid men
of Boston until Euclades, the son of
earth, should stir in his mighty
cavern."
Upon reading this, alas, too many
people in this wicked world would
cry out, "Let her rip."
Too LONG BY HALF.-On :i recent
ocsasion, a gentleman was coming up
from York, England, by the Great
Northern Railway, and it appeared,
as ill luck would have it, that there
sat opposite to him a gentleman with
remarkable long io^s, which ho was
not very particular about digging
into our friend's knees. On the
arrival of the train at Birniington,
the long-legged man observed to his
neighbor, "I shall get out and stretch
my legs here a bit, as we wait ten
minutes." "For goodness' sake, sir,
don't do that!" said our friend, "for
I am quite sure they arc too long by
half already."
A correspondent of the Ploughman
gives his method of curing a horse of |
the practice of kicking in the stable.
He says his method is to put a strap
around one of the hind legs, bet ween
the fetlock, and the hoof, with a
small chain, about two feet long, at?
tached. Whenever the horse kicks I
the chain will hit him and he will
soon be cured.
