The foreign import, and export trude of Charleston for the month of April has exhibited nu increased im? provement, compared withJbhe trans? actions of the previous month. The recent foreign arrivals, cou? pled with :i fuller supply ol' cotton on the market, and a further decline in tho staple, have all combined to give un impetus to foreign- trade. Tho imports have been increased by the arrival of several foreign ves? sels, some of which, yee regret to state, have been long over-due, there? by rendering certain classes of goods ordered for the fall und winter trude unseasonable, und consequently un? marketable. This great drawback tu direct trade suggests the iden that a regular lino of steam vessels should be immediately established bet ween this port and Liverpool and Havre. Our importing merchants could then calculate with some degree of certainty upon the receipt of their orders, and not be compelled to hold them over at a heavy expense and 1? ?ss until the season for their demand shall arrive. Our merchants have tested the experiment of importing by steamers from abroad into New York, and transporting their mer? chandize in bond to this port, but the delay and expensive charges, with the additional item of double freight and insurance, have not been au equiva? lent for the time saved by this plan. -Hence the paramount necessity of a direct line of steamers. A line of steam propellers, each possessinga freight capacity for 1,000 bales of cotton, and of sufficient draft of water to cross our bar, would prove a profitable investment, and infuse a broad and general current of pros? perity to our commercial circles. Let our Board of Trade take this subject into immediate consideration, and act promptly, in order to meet the wants and requirements of the fall and winter trade. Our Legisla? ture should be memorialized on the subject. It his been liberal in its assistance to railroad companies a d other corporations, and it is, there? fore, but reasonable to conclude that it will not withhold its aid and sup? port from a project which will estab? lish a direct trade with European ports, open H direct stream of immi? gration and capital, und which will bear directly upon the commercial prosperity of our metropolis. Other Southern cities are making arrange ^rnfSnts for this trade. Let us not be ^Tauting in energy and enterprise to 'flflfysecure it. also. We append the following statement of tho import and export trade for the month of April: Receipts from custom?, $40,438.28; dutiable value of merchandize paying duty, 61,890; dutiable value of merchandize .ware? housed, 32,500; value of merchandize free of duty, 0,000. Quantity and value of cotton exported-foreign, 207 bales sea island, 0,201 bales up? land-$1,080,015; quantity and value of cotton exported-coastwise, 113 bales sea island, 2,864 bales upland - $553,137. Number and tonnage of vessels engaged in foreign trudi', 19"; tons, 5,291; number and tonnage of vessels engaged in coastwise trade, 111; tons, 41,371. -Charleston Neus.
