We hive, of late, had numerous
verbal ; Hints from many portions
?d' tlie State relativo to the now grow?
ing crop of cotton, and most of ilium
agree in stating that the prospects for
tho coming season aro exceedingly
nattering, the freedmen working well,
far beyond all anticipations, and that
in some portions more cotton had
been planted than tit any ti tm' prior
to the outbreak of the late civil war.
We have heard of farmers who have
heretofore worked from two tn three
hands who are now working twenty
five, fifty and even more. This is
moro generally applicable to the Ger?
man farmers, who will make more
than four-fold the amount of cotton
raised by them iu 18<"><) 'Cl. The only
fear of the larger planters is, that
when the time arrives for picking;, the
hot sultry season of the year, the
negro, now that compulsory labor bas
been done away with, will not work
with the same diligence that lie does
now, and that the great difficulty will
be in gathering the cotton in time to
prevent injury. With all these lights
before us, it is yet impossible to get
anything but a vague idea of what
the crop may be; still, we believe
that if nothing happens to injure the
plant, our former estimate ol' about
half a crop for our State will prove to
have been considerably under, rather
than over, the figure. This, how?
ever, must necessarily be all guess?
work, as it has been generally con?
ceded that even at thc commencement
of tho picking season it is yet too
early to make a reliable estimate of
the growing crop. If this was the
case before tho war, when thc labor?
ers were worked with regularity and
efficiency, how much moro uncertain
it is now. when so large a portion of
the labe .-rs throughout the Southern
States have become inefficient, and,
to a great extent, demoralized.

The Atlanta Commercial Bulletin has
the following from a correspondent
in thc South-western part of the
State :
Owing to the great scarcity of
negro labor, the cotton crop for this
year will barely reach half the amount
produced in 186Q, which, I think, was
estimated at 4,000,000 of bides. J
am clearly of the opinion that 1,500,
000 bales is a full estimate for the
coming crop.
This State, at the present time,
possesses more negroes than her sis?
ters, yet she will hardly make half a
erop. With few exceptions, there is
not a plantation in this section of our
State that has its full quota of hands.
A vast number of farms ure entirely
without laborers of any kind, and
are, therefore, idle. The same thing
can be said of other portions of the
cotton-growing regions of tho State,
in Middle Georgia, there m :i great
deficiency of laborers, ami what <// <
there are being tampered with ami
seduced from their employers, for thc
more fertile lands of the West, or for
some other purpose, leaving :i large
number of planters entirely destitute,
onto.
The wheat crop in Huron County,
Ohio, is said to bo half killed. Many
farmers are plowing up their w heat
sowed last fall. lt. is most inj tired on
the clay soil.
The Tnscarawas County Ailvocale
.says :
From conversation with intelligent
and observing farmers front different
parts (d' the County, we aro led to the
conclusion that there will not be more
than one-third the usual wheat crop.
The Zanesville Courier .says:
A great deal of alarm exists anton",
the farming community of this County
in relation to f e prospects of the
wheat crop for the present year, lt
is said t1 \ there will not ho over one
fourth oi ..n average crop; that the
wheat is not in the ground to produce
more, having been frozen and killed
by tho cold weather of the past win
ter. The winter of 1865 '<>?> was
undoubtedly a hard one for the wheat
crop. The absence of snow, joined"
with severe coif! sit times, no doubt
rendered tho prospectivo crop, in
part, ?i f?iluro, but not to the extent
which (armers seem t<> think. The
amount ot* wheal sown Inst fall was,
perhaps, larger than for several years
past, and should it, owing to freezing
out, stand a little thin on tho ground
this spring - should some fields be
entirely destroyed-wo have but little ?
doubt that the coming harvest will
develo}> the fact that the yield in the
County will not fall much behind that
of former years.

in regard to what they consider, pros?
pectively, a total failure of the crop,
thal, they are buying of our millers
