THE CCIITURE op KICK.-"Before the negroes were emancipated, the annual production of Cooper River was ?bout 20,000 tierces of Tice, ave? raging 625 pounds a tierce; but lost year, the first season a crop was planted by employment of free labor, not more than 800 tierces-were made; a sad falling off, indeed." The foregoing is from the pen of Dr. Irving, ou Cooper River, South Carolina. In the production of rice, the falling off in that State and Geor? gia will be as bad this year as it was last. It will be the story over again of Jamaica, and its productions. Eight hundred tierces as against twenty thousand on one river alone, ' and that, we believe, the least pro? ductive of all known as rice rivers in South Carolina ! ? 'What a falling off" is here, "my countrymen!" The rice lands of the South constituted a large portion of its wealth before the war. That they may again do so is possible, but not probable. If Dr. Irving's opinion should prove to be correct, and we do not doubt that it is, the culture of rice in the South may be considered as abandoned ; for such results S3 have flowed from it the past year, and promises to flow from it the present year, through the labor of freedmen, cannot "keep up" the "old plantations."
