THK LATEST CURIOSITY-WATER

Sandusky Register has the following:
A gentleman of this city is tho un?
happy possessor of a bright little
daughter six months old. When the
child. was born the head was entirely
devoid of hair, except the back head,
which, with the ladies, is covered bj'
the waterfall, and on this portion was
a thick growth of jet-black hair, three
inches long, and precisely in the
shape of the most approved waterfall.
The young lady paid us the compli?
ment of a visit yesterday-wearing
lier fashionable, but natural append?
age. This singular growth of hair
remains, presenting a grotesque ap?
pearance, and being only slightly
relieved by thc usual growth of fine
white hair on other portions of the
hoad.
The circumstance is, of course,
easily explained by tho prevailing
mode of wearing the huir, and the
impression made by the stylo upon
the mind of the mother. Another ex?
planation has been suggested, name?
ly, that nature, seeing what deal of
trouble and expense tho construction
of an artificial waterfall incurs, de?
cided to provide the next generation
of young ladies with the genuine
article from her own laboratory.
This will be a great saving of expense
in large families.
THE NEW REG?ALE.-The Hartford
(Conn.) Post gives an account of how
a white man polished a negro's boots
after the following style:

gan, bet George Hodge, barber, (co?
lored,) that English would be elected,
and agreed to black the latter's boots
in a public placo if he should be de?
feated. The affair came off, the other
day, at the store of Hall Sz Morgan,
in good shape. A box, such as the
boys use at all railroad stations, was
sent for fron Hartford for the occa?
sion. Mr. Morgan displayed much
artistic talent, and was loudly cheered
by the crowd who were present. Mr.
Hodge, the colored man, in the em?
ploy of Jeffrey Sc Welch, occasionally
' pointed at some part of the boots
which he thought needed a little more
blacking, and Mr. Morgan cheer?
fully put it on. The task being
finished, Mr. Morgan said to the
by-standers: "Gentlemen, it is as I
told you it would be-if Mr. Hawley
was < lee ted you would see white men
polishing black men's boots, and if
Mr. English was elected, yon would
see black men polishing white men's
boots. " Three cheers were given for
Morgan for having faithfully per?
formed his dutj', and three more were
given for Governor Hawley. Mr. C.
H. Warner then offered the brush and
blacking box for sale. They brought
three dollars.
IMMENSE CONCERNS.-It is almost
incredible what vast amounts of sales
are made by some of the principal
houses in New York. Out of 100 in
a single district- thc largest business
one, however-there are only three
whose sales have been less than $1,
000,000 in the last ten months. At
the head of the list stands H. B.
Claflin ?fe Co., whose sales x-ench the
enormous amount of $12,506,715;
while A. T. Stewart & Co. report the
amount of their wholesale business
for the same period at ^39,391,083.
What a grand centro of commerce
must be that which makes such ex?
hibits of the trade of individuals !
Yet the day may come in after ages
when it will bo, like Palmyra, erased
from the face of tito earth, and thc
anchor may rest upon the granite
columns and capitals of the great ex?
change of Wall Si "eet !
The entire population of New Yori
city, including its suburbs, is 1,458,
383. Of this number, 850,980 an,
natives, and 007,403 ure foreigners
four aliens to every six native born.
There are 203,700 Irish, 119,977 Ger
mans, 27,049 English, 8,049 French,
9,207 Scotch, and 1,771 Swiss.
The New York Tribune, celebrated,
on the 10th inst., its twenty-fifth an?
niversary, by un enlargement .of size
and a banquet at Delmonico'^. In his
speech at the banquet, Mr Greeley
stated that Tribune was Btarted on a
capital of Si,OOO and that borrowed
money. The World, in ita report of
the proceedings, says that that news?
paper cost $200,000. Since the'
commencement of the Tribune, some?
thing like 500 daily newspapers have
been started in the City of New York,
of which not more than five survive.
The success of the Tribune is due to
the great editorial ability of Mr. Gree?
ley, and tho business tact, capacity
and energy of his partner, Mr. Mc
Elrath. _^
LEGACY TO A LAWYER.-Mrs. D. C.
Phillips, formerly of Boston, died in
New York, last -week, worth $40,000.

liarly difficult circumstances. By her
will, she bequeathes one-fourth of her
property to Charles Cowley, Esq., a
lawyer in Boston, who was her coun?
sel in the divorce suit, *'as act of
gratitude to him for the peace and

years of my life."
