The fright of the Canadians over
the demonstrations of tho Fenians at j
Eastport, and their excitement over j
the capture of Head Centre Murphy
and his friends at Cornwall, appear to
have in no way abated. The residents
of Campobello Island are flying from
that t?rreatened point, -while St. Ste?
phens, and indeed all New Bruns?
bek, is aroused and agitated by the
appearance of a small Fenian force at
Calais. It was supposed that tho
Fenians were leaving-Eastport for
Calais, and were about to make a de?
scent on St. Stephens, instead of
. Campobello. At aU points in tho ;
British provinces fears appear to be,
entertained of a raid. The Govern-1
ment authorities appear to think the
Campobello demonstration as a feint
only, and are preparing for the ap?
pearance of an invading force along
the Niagara frontier. Cabinet meet- j
inga were held daily, volunteering
was Very brisk, and much feeling, and j
a great deal more fright, is generally
manifest on the part of the Canadians.
Some of the Canadian papers are en?
deavoring to impress on the minds of
the people the idea that the United
States authorities are encouraging
the Fenian movement in order to
bring about a war on the fishery ques?
tion.
The arrest of the Fenians appears
to have been unwarrantable. Ex
Attorney-General Macdonald, the
counsel of Murphy, declares that no
evidence exists by which he and his
staff can be held on any other ch argo
than that of a misdemeanor in carry?
ing concealed deadly weapons. Sheedy
was examined and released- on the
charges upon which arrested, but
bound over for safe keeping on other
charges made by a Government de?
tective. He has been sent to Corn?
wall as a witness against the other
prisoners. President Roberts, who
is at Washington, believes that the
movement on the Northern frontier
will not assist the cause of Irish inde?
pendence.-New YorTc Herald, 13th.
The Finnegans will steer clear of
Bermuda, but Campobello might be
seized by a secret expedition, and for
some time nobody would bo one whit
the wiser, if the inhabitants were pre?
vented from leaving the island. Until
a fleet were gathered to cover the
landing of troops, Killian and Ro?
berts might rule over this tiny spot
of British soil, establish tho irish
Republic of Campobello, issue let?
ters of marque and reprisal, and wage
war cn the commerce of Britain. It
ia - true that in a few days thc inva?
ders would bc ousted, that tho island
affords not the slightest advantage as
a point of attack on the mainland of
New Brunswick, and that tho Finne?
gans might just as well seize any
other small islands among thc hun?
dreds of thousands which own tho
sway of Britain. But the seizure
would make a sensation in New York;
Pat and Biddy would not know
whether Campobello was in Ireland
or New Brunswick, and might bo dis?
posed to make further investments in
bonds of the Irish Republic to carry
on the great war. On the whole, we
are inclined to think that tho scheme
would pay, looked at from the point
of view of tho leaders of the Finne
gsvK Their difficulty will be to find
enough of fellows willing to risk a
halter to establish an Irish Republic
on an island in tho Bay of Fundy.
Even the countrymen of Sir Boyle
Roche will, we fancy, see tho bull in
that idea, and keep their necks out of
the noose. - Toronto Globe, April 6th.
There is no doubt but that events
are approaching a crisis which will
cause decided attention within tho
next ten days by the President in
regard to the officials in his Cabinet,
and other officers who are opposing
his policy.
The Boston Post, retorts upon
some fellow iu the f ollowing manner :

LAFAYETTE, INDIAN\, April ll.-A
colored man named Barnes brought
suit against a prominent citizen this
morning to enforce a contract. The
defendant, for answer, sets up that
the negro came into the State m vio?
lation of the thirteenth article of the
Constitution of the State of Indiana,
which, under pains and penalties,
prohibits negroes from coming into
the State, and debars them from all
rights to enforce contracts, etc.
The plaintiff demurs to the answer,
maintaining that the thirteenth article
Ls void and of no effect, because: 1.
It is in contravention of the letter
and spirit of the Constitution of the
United States. 2. It is in direct con?
flict with the constitutional amend?
ment abolishing slavery. 3. It is
void under the first section 45f the
civil rights bill, which gives to all
persons born in the United States
full right to make and enforce con
I tracts, any law, statute, ordinanoe,
I regulation, or custom to the contrary
notwithstanding.
The court sustained the demurrer,
and the defendant appealed to the
Circuit Court, which is now in sea
sion.
The case was submitted to-day, and
after argument of counsel, it was
taken under advisement. Judge Gest j
will probably render a decision to-1
morrow. Under the second section I
of tho civil rights bill, he can only
decide in favor of the negro, for the j
reason that an adverse decision would ?
subject him to the penalty of Si,OOO i
fine and imprisonment.
We are glad that the first case un?
der this unconstitutional law arises in j
a State like Indiana; and we are in-1
dined to believe that the occurrence
of a few stich cases iu each of the
Northern States -would bring the peo?
ple tb their senses.
Look at the points in the demurrer
of tho negro. The first point is not
worth an argument, because that pro?
vision has existed in the Indiana
Constitution for years, and when it
was adopted, Indiana might, under
the Federal Constitution, have estab?
lished slavery and reduced the blacks
coming into the State to that condi?
tion. Certainly, then, unless the
recent amendment to the Federal
Constitution is inconsistent with tho
article in question, the latter is not
unconstitutional. Now, that amend?
ment merely provides, first, that
slavery sholl not exist in the United
States, and, secondly, that Congress
shall have power to carry this prohi?
bition of slavery into effect. No?
thing else than this can fairly be
found in the amendment; and as the
article in the Indiana Constitution
certainly does not establish slavery,
it follows that even tho amended
Federal-Constitution is in no wise in
conflict with tlie Indians Constitu?
tion.
Tho third point in the demurrer is,
that the article in question is in con?
flict with the new civil rights law.
And quoad hoc we agree with the de
! mnrrer; but we do not agree with it
that the article is therefore "void."
On the contrary, wo believe that even
the present Supreme Court of the
United States, notwithstanding all of
its radical prejudices, and notwith?
standing that Chief Justice Chase
has already, extra curia, pronounced
nu opinion in favor of the law, would,
if this Indiana caso were brought
before it, hohl that the late is uncon?
stitutional. We hope this case will
be taken np. There could not well '
occur a better ono for testing the I
question.-Richmond Dispatch.
MOKE AMENDMENTS.-In view of
the fact that the Abolitionists in Con?
gress have proposed some eighty-odd
amendments to the Constitution, a
factious fellow, in Kentucky, offers
the annexed amendments for the con?
sideration of the Constitution tinkers:
1. Every freedman sholl havo a
bureau for himself, with a looking
glass on tho top, if he wants it.
2. Every freedman shall have a
secretary.
3. Every freed boy or girl sholl
hove a wardrobe.
4. Every freed child shall have
everything it (Ties for.
5. White people, whether fro? o
not, must behave themselves.
6. All people of every color, except
red, must vote.
7. Every free white male citizen of
the age of twenty years or under, and
of sound mind or otherwise, may
vote: if lie will take tho oath, he
would be a negro, if lie could.
The death of a Mormon bishop is
thus announced: Ho was thirty-seven
years old, and leaves an interesting
family of eleven wives and forty
seven small children to mourn his
death.
Victoria has thanked his Holiness
for opposing the Fenians, and invites
him to on asylum in England, should
he need it.

the ear, but another way."

Senate, for alleged disloyal senti
