the two arch Republicans had to bolt j

This little story accounts for the
dislike and even contempt which the
Fenians feel for the French nation,
and which may be traced eveu in a
Fenian account of the Norman con?
quest and the fdundation of our old
Norman families. Since theu the j
interesting couple have devoted them-1
selves to Ireland. With the only I
five-franc piece Mr. Stephens ever
saved out of vulgar industry he and j
his companions tossed for two 1
worlds-heads for Ireland, tails for !
America. Stephens won, and since j
then has walked through every village ?
and hamlet in Ireland, taking notes, !
winning pledges and communicating
everywhere the design in progress..
According to the Irish People, he is a
man made for persuasion and com?
mand; with s nek a figure, such a
bearing, such arms, hands and feet,
such curly hair, such a mouth, and
such teeth, as to be positively irre?
sistible. He can talk and write in all
languages fluently and gracefully,
particularly in Irish. He is indefati?
gable, can subsist on nothing, sleep
on straw, and remember everybody
. he eyer saw or heard of. His power j
of disguise is magical. The pobce j
will never catch him. They cannot |
