A SECOND WILLIAM TELL.-A
blacksmith, named Coles, of Hlminis
ter, England, has performed a feat
which rivals that ascribed to William
Tell. A child, aged seven years,
placed over bis head an iron band
simiL.r to that used for the nuts of |
cart wheels. The child's neck began
to swell, and the parents were horri?
fied to find that it was impossible to
remove the band, and speedy suffo?
cation was imminent. Coles was
called in, and suggested the desperate
idea of hammering the iron off with
a sledge, and he successfully com?
pleted his dangerous task. While one
person held the legs and another the
head of the little one, Coles fearless?
ly smashed at the ring and severed it.
? false blow of half an inch, and
instantaneous death must have re?
sulted. A tough story.
Cows LOSING THEIR CUD.-A friend
writes us that he has seen two cases
where it was said the cows had ' 'lost
their cud." In Doth instances the
animals were nearly doctored to
death, before the character of the
disease was ascertained. The remedy |
then applied was to administer
"cud," composed as follows: Sidt
pork chopped fine, mixed with dough,
a little chimney soot, and an egg." A
ball as large as a goose egg was given
for a dose. The cattle recovered.
We do not behove "loss of cud" to be
a disease itself, but the result of dis?
ease or debility. The medicine ad?
ministered in this case proved an
alterative; and that, together with
cessation of "dosing," recovered the
animals. -Rural New Yorker.
A witty clergyman, accosted by an j
old acquaintance by the Tiame of
Cobb, replied: I
"I don't know you, sir."
"My name is Cobb," rejoined the
man, who was about half-seas-over.
"Ah.'eir," replied the clergyman,
"you have so much of the corn on
you that I did not see the cob."
A rich Russian prince in Paris has

The fine world is much moved by the
event.
