A CONTRAST.-How mucli more to
be admired is the following extract
from the columns of the New York
Times-an honest, charitable paper
than the malignant attacks of thc
letter writer of the Wisconsin State
Journal and ex-Lieutenant-Colonel
Beadle, in relation to the Southern
people!
Speaking of the anniversary of the
fall of Richmond, the Times says:
Instead of moralizing on the occur?
rence of the anniversary of the en?
trance of our army into Richmond,
we will merely indulge in an expres?
sion of gratification that a brief year
has done so much to rebuild the ruins
of the war. The Southerners have
neither fallen irto despair, nor, as a
general thing, do they nurse malig?
nant feelings. They have not sunk
into debasement, as other conquered
peoples have done; nor have their ac?
tivities become paralyzed. On the
contrary, while they have accepted
the issues of the war, they have al?
most universally gone to work. All
this must be remembered in favor of
the Southern ?people, as its conse?
quences are in favor of tho entire
country. For the rebuilding of
Southern cities, the re-organization
of Southern industry, and the re?
sumption of all forms of activity in
the South, are almost as deep matter
of interest here as there. There arc
sorrows of the war that.will last
through this generation, and there
are painful results of it that will en?
dure for oenturies;but a twelve-month
has sufficed to heal np many of its
scars, and restore many of its ravages.
INTEREST OUTWEIGHS SYMPATHY.
Two of the Baltimore papers declare
that Southern merchants pass by that
Southern city, and go to Philadelphia
and New York just as they did before
the war, to lay in their supplies of
goods. The reason, of course, is
that greater inducements are offered
by the merchants of the favored
cities.
