A NEW -ORLEANS DECISION. ^The
following very significant and im?
portant decision of Judge Durell, in
the United Stares Circuit Court, nt
New Orleans, in the case of the
United States against Harai Robin?
son, has just been published. The
counsel for defendant offered a mo?
tion that Gen? Canby pay certain
money held by him and claimed by
defendant in' Court, which motion
the Judge granted. Mr. Goodloe,
United States District Attorney, said
he did not believe Gen. Canby would
obey the order. Whereupon Judge
Durell held that perhaps it would
have been more safe if the court had
followed the opinion and example of
Chief Justice Chase, and not held a
United States Court in districts under
military rule; but as he had held the
court under military rode, believed he
had the authority to maintain the dig?
nity of the court to its full extent; and
if Gen. Canby, or any other high
authority, presumed to ignore the
decree of the United States Circuit
Court of this city, he would dis?
charge the defendant on his own
recognizance.
There was quite an excitement on
the passenger train from Goldsboro
recently. An old gentleman in the
cars, who was comfortably dozing,
just before day, perceived a strange,
unpleasant odor and sensation, and,
upon suddenly opening his eyes,
found a fellow sitting next to him,
very deliberately holding a vial of
chloroform to his nose. He imme?
diately clutcned the disconcerted
rascal, the cars were stopped, and the
villain put off the train-when he
made for the woods in "double
quick."
The freedmen of Richmond cele?
brated the first anniversary of their
deliverance from bondage Tuesday;
procession embracing several thou?
sand. They marched from the West?
ern suburbs through the principal
streets, with banners and music, to
Capitol Square, where an address was
delivered by Rev. Mr. Hunnicut.
Good order prevailed during the day.
