their (the negroes') general truthful?

ble to suppose such a similarity?
A. They have been, in a great mea?
sure, taught to speak falsely and to
act falsely.
Q. Taught by whom ?
A. Their very condition has taught
them that. The condition of slavery
teaches falsehood. But there is a
principle of religious character in
their nature which holds them above
?white people of as low a grade. They
are more religious, but the nature of
their condition has not made them
moral.
To be "more religious than moral,"
"while speaking and acting falsely,"
shows an opinion less favorable to the
negro character than we had sup?
posed. This is the class of people
which it is insisted shall be at once
endowed with the great boon of fran?
chise; and if the grant is not made,
that the penalty is to keep eleven
States and their inhabitants unrepre?
