REMARKABLE DEATH.-"We stated a
few days since that a number of dis?
tilleries in New York had been seized
on the charge of violating the reve?
nue laws. Two officers going to ex?
amine one of these, ore of them was
drowned in a vat. A Mr. Griffiths
opened a trap-door io the floor, which
he supposed led to u cellar. Stepping
down as he supposed to a stairway,
he fell into a vat fall of mash, about
twelve feet deep, ind was drowned.

York, had had his safe robbed of
$1,500,000. The old man is eccen?
tric-sometimes left his safe open
takes his loss with indifference, and
says he minds the newspaper fuss
over the affair more than the loss.
COMPLIMENT TO THE PRESIDENT.-A
resident of Washington for more than
half a century, and has known all the
Presidents, says he listened to Presi?
dent Johnson's speech on the 22d,
and that of all those who have oc?
cupied the President's chair, Mr.
Johnson is by far the best speaker.
