THE STATE OF TRADE TN NEW YORK.
The week closes with a very uneasyr,
if not panicky, feeling in commercial
and business circles, proceeding from
causes which were truthfully set
forth in the Ledger's money article of
this morning. The decline in gold,
the fall in the prices of most descrip?
tions of produce and merchandize,
the heavy stocks of unsaleable foreign
goods in our warehouses, together
with the unsettled aspect of the poli?
tical situation at Washington, are
likely to bring about such a crisis ere
long as will seriously affect the entire
country. Such, at least, is the opi?
nion of the most clear-headed, con?
servative minds "in the streets"
minds not usually given to "discount?
ing" unpleasant probabilities in ad?
vance. While it is to be hoped that
their apprehensions will prove un?
founded, it would be folly to close
one's ears to them, unless there is no
desire to "stand from under." Se?
veral heavy failures, in different
branches of trade, are reported while
