Holt, has just decided that no au? thority for the trial of a civilian by court martial can be found in any of the Articles of War, those articles being euacted Bolely for the govern? ment of the armies of the United States, and being applicable only to persons iu the military service. He considers it strictly legal, however, to try by military courts civilians former? ly in the service, for crimes committed whilst in the service. By this decision the supremacy of the civil courts, in all cases where citizens are concerned, is acknowledged, aud it would seem that the days of military trials of civilians have passed by.
