Thc First Baby.

I have one of these interesting ani?
mals at my house. It came -when it
rained, dark as pitch, and ruy um?
brella at tho store-no cars ruuniug.
The doctor lived five miles due West,
and the nurse six miles due East, and
when I got home to the bosom of my
family, the condensed milkman was
at the next door. It is a funny chip,
that baby. Solferino color, and the
length of a Bologna sausage. Cross?
I guess not. Um um; it commenced
chasing me down tho pathway of life
just when muslin, linen and white
dannel were the highest they had
been since Adam built a house 'or
Mrs. Eve's chickens-doctors charged
two dollars a squint, four dollars a
grunt, and on account of the scarcity
of rain in the country, take what is
left in a man's pocket, no discount
for cash, and send bill for balance,
January 1. A poor thing is that baby;
a speck of a nose like a wart; head as
bald as a squash., and no place to
hitch a waterfall; a month just suited
to come the gum game and chew
milk. Oh, crackee, yon should hear
ber sing. I have bumped it, stuffed
my fur cap down its throat, giving it
the smoothing iron to play with, but
that little red lump that looks as if it
couldn't hold blood enough to keep a
mosquito from fainting, persists in
yelling like thunder. It shows a
great desire to swallow its fists; and
the other day they dropped down its
throat, and all that prevented their
going clear through was the crook of
its elbows. It stopped its music, and
I was happy one and a half minutes.
It is a pleasant thing to have a baby
in the houso.
Think of the pleasures of a father,
in dishabille, trembling in the mid?
night hour, with his warm feet upon
a square yard of oil-cloth, dropping
paregoric in a spoon by moonlight,
somebody thumping on the door,
wife of your bosom shouting "hurry,"
and the baby yelling till the fresco
drops -from the ceiling. Its a nice
time to think of dress coats, pants,
ties and white kids. Shades of de?
parted cock-tails, what comfort, what
a picture fov an artist in plaster of
Paris ! Its mother says the darling is
troubled with wind on the stomach
it beats all the wind instruments you
ever heard. I have to get up in the
cold while the milk warms-it uses
the bottle. I have a cradle with a
representation of a miraculous sooth?
ing syrup bottle on the dash-board.
I tried to stop its breath the other
night-it was no go; 1 rocked it so
hard I missed tho stays, and sent it
slap clear across the room, upsetting
a jar of preserves. It didn't make
any noise, then, oh no!
I ts mother pays only wait until it
gets bleached, (.l's been vaccinated,)
and old enough to crawl around and
feed on pins. Yes, I'm going to wait.
Won't it be delightful? John, run
for the doctor, sis has fallen in the
slop-pail and is chokin^ with a potato
skin; sis has fallen down stairs; sis
has swallowed the tack hammer;
shows signs of mumps, measles,
croup, whooping cough, small-pox,
cholic, dysentery, cholera infantum,
or some other darn thing to take all

beef; and all this comos from sham?
pooing and cm-ling my hair, wearing
nice clothes, looking liandsome, going
a courting, and making my wife fall
in love and marry mc.

Amongst the prominent skaters at
the reservoir pond, near Baltimore,
lately, was Mrs. Henry E. Johnson,
late Miss Harriot liane, niece of ex
president Buchanan.
How TO MAKE MUTTON,-A lot of
Coteswold sheep haring been seen in
New York, that wonld weigh from 300
to 400 pounds, the proprietor (a Ca?
nadian) was asked his method for
fattening sheep, and replied:
'Tn the first place, I secure a good
breed. That is the most important
point. The next thing is t? keep
them growing from the time they are
weaned till they are taken to the
slaughter-house, never allowing them
to grow poor at any season of the
year. I have fed them all the hay,
peas and oats they would eat. Peas
are better than Indian corn for
mutton. Oats furnish a nitrogeneous
matter for tim formation of necessary
muscle. Peas produce more fat than
tho same number of pounds of cereal
grain."
' 'Do you feed any roots and straw?"
"Yes, each sheep gets not less
than ono or two pounds of turnips
daily, with r?l the straw to eat and
lie on that he wants; and a good
shed is provided, with a supply of
pure water, and salt to lick at plea?
sure."
"How much do you expect to get
for the largest of your flock?"
"Two hundred dollars per head, or
I ship them from this market."
The next day we learned they were
taken at that price for Christmas
mutton.
