German papers announce the death,
at Magdeburg, of a learned physician,
Dr. Julius Ton dem Fischweiler, who
in his will, has left the world the fol?
lowing scientific secret, viz: That his
own great age, 109, is entirely to be
ascribed to his constant habit of
sleeping with his head toward the
North, and the rest of his body in a
direction coinciding as closely as pos?
sible with that of the meridian, that
is, with his heels to the South. From
omwatincr IQ this habit, th?? terned
doctor considered that the iron con?
tained in our system, finding itself in
the direction of the magnetic currents
which are constantly flowing over the
surface of the globe toward the
North Pole, becomes magnetized and
thus increases the energy of the vital :
principle.
CUBS FOB THE SMALL POX.-A !
friend has kindly given us the follow- j
ing recipe for the cure of small pox: :
The mode of treatment is as fol- j
lows: When the preceding fever is at
its height, and just before the erup- !
tion appears, the chest is rubbed!
with croton oil and tartaric ointment.
This canses the whole of the eruption
to appear on that part of the body,
to the relief of the rest. It also ;
secures a full and complete eruption,
and thus prevents the disease from
attacking internal organ?. This is i
said to be the established mode of i
. treatment in the English army in
China, by general orders, and it is
regarded as a perfect cure.

INCREASED COST OF LIVING. -A com- j
mittee from Boston recently visited j
Albany, New "York and Philadelphia, j
with the view of inquiring into tho |
comparative cost of living in those j
cities, the condition of the markets, ?
&c. The committee found that the j
increased cost of living in Boston was j
126 per cent, greater than the cost of i
living in 1860; that the increase in !
Philadelphia was 150 per cent, greater ?
than in 1860, and in New York and !
Albany a still greater increase. What j
is the per centage of increase in the j
cost of living in Baltimore over 1860 I
we have no means of definitely ascer- !
faining, but should suppose it to be j
at least 125 per cent.-Sun.

whilst those who were in possession
maintain that it is private property, j

The winter on the Pacific coast has
been unusually severe. 200 Mormons,
on the way to Montana Territory, are
known to have perished. Accounts
from the North-west represent the
season to be very severe all through
that section. Instances of entire
families freezing to death are record?
ed. One man perished within three
rods of his house.
The latest novelty in photography
is a fashion of taking portraits on
porcelain watch-dials. By this de?

A cotton press and warehouse com
?roy has been formed in Galveston,

January, 1866, and the redeemable Stocks
and Bonds remaining due at samo dato, in
pursuance of the City Ordnances "To
Provide for the Pavmcnt of Arrears of
Principal and Interest on the City Debt by
an Issue of City Stock."
The Certificates will bc issued to the
names of Stockholders as shown by tho
books of the offico, and delivered only to
the parties therein named, their legal rep?
resentatives or attorneys appointed to re?
ceive and receipt for the same.
In all cases it will bo necessary that
parties who wish to draw their inter?s?
through agents shall givo new order? or
powers of attorney, and renewed ovideaco
of legal representation will be reqnired.
