dent of the former republic of Texas,
has published a notice calling upon
nil who have been victims of the op?
pression of the Freedmen's Burean in
that State to forward the evidence to
him, to be forwarded to President
Johnson, who will reprimand them.
The demand for laborers is greater
than the supply, and the planters are
seeking for freedmen. It is stated
that more cotton is being planted in
some sections of the State than ever
before, under the impression that it
\rUl not be less than twenty-five cents
a pound for several years to come.
A singular disaster occurred on the
New York Central Railroad, a few
days ago. One train ran off the
track, and two others, coming from
opposite directions, ran into the
wreck, and were in turn shattered.

Valuable and Extensive Water Power
in the City of Columbia for Sale.

THE undersigned Commissioners, ap?
pointed by the General Assembly of
South Carolina, at its late session, will
receive bids for thc valuable WATER
POWER known as thc COLUMBIA CANAD,
until the first day of April next.
Thc Canal is eight thousand six hundred
and fifty-four yards long, and the average
fall for the first three miles is fourteen feet,
commencing at ten feet at Upper street, in
Columbia, and attaining nineteen feet one
inch at Bridge street; tho remaining two
miles, from Bridge street to its mouth,
commences at nineteen feet ten inches, ana
attains a fall of twenty-five feet. Fine
building sites exist hetweon the canal and
river, giving complete protection to build?
ings and machinery rrom freshets. The
State, through the undersigned, will con?
vey thc canal and all its appurtenances,
together with the right of way for Bixtj
feet on each side of the centre of the canal
I to tho purchaser. Compensation to the
j adjacent land owners for tho right of way,
I to be made by thc purchaser, on the same
just and equitable terms that the right oi
way was conveyed to tho Greenville ann

This power has been accurately surveyet
by Prof. John LeConte, of tho South Caro
lina University; his report, together witt
the Act of the Genoral Assemhiy and tb.ii
advertisement, has been printed, and mai
bo obtained by addressing Jas. G. Gibbes
Esq., Mayor of Columbia,
j Prof. LeConte estimates that by doubling
the original capacity of the canal, as re
quired by tho Act, that the power secure(
to Bridge street will be 355 horse-power
the average head being fourteen feet; an<
from Bridge street to its mouth 532 horse
power, wits average head of twenty-Mi
feet, and a current of one foot per second
With a current of two feet per second, th
powers would be 710 and 1,064 horse-powoi
and if the machinery is not mn at night
the power may he doubled by accumul?t
ing water in reservoirs.
"As the supply of water," says Pro)
LeConte, "which may bc turned from th
river into the canal at its head, is almos
unlimited, the canal can he enlarged to a
extent commensurate with the demand fo
water power. If desired, it may be mad
to supply water to the extent of 5,000 h or si
power or moro. In fact, by very simpl
arrangements, one-third or one talf, c
i even more, of tho whole water in Brea
River, might be turned into such an er
larded canal."
This water powgr is literally within th
city of Columbia. Thc city is now supplie
by "railroads penetrating nearly every Dh
trict in thc State, furnishing the produ<
tions of cotton, rice, wheat, beef and pr<
visions, with little oxpense at this importar
point.
The city of Columbia is supplied with ga
and good water, the climate is salubrior
and healthy, being above the miasmal'
region, and invites, for pleasant settlemei
and society, merchants, artisans, meehi
nies, manufacturers and persons of fo:
tune and leisure.
Tho property will he sold on the followin
conditions, tc" wit: 1st. Thc purchasi
shall, within two years from the dato i
conveyance, complete tho widening an
deepening of said canal to at least twice i
origininal capacity. (Its original capacit
was fifteen feet wide at mp, eight feet i
bottom and four feet in depth; to doub
it according to Prof. LeConte's report,
will recmire tho removal of 36,107 cub
yards of earth, and 3,200 cubio yards
"stone to Bridge street, and from Bridj
street to its mouth 22,176 cubic yards
earth-no stone to bc removed.) That tl
samo shall always be kept open for boath
purposes, free of charges, to where it
now used. (This will not interfere at (
with the water power for driving machin
ry, as boats only descend as far as the fir
lock, near Upper street. )
That the water shall not become sta
nant, and that it shall not housed foroth
than hydraulic purposes.
That one-third of tho sum bid shall
paid within thirty days after notice of a
ceptance of bid; one-third at theexpirati
of six months therefrom, and tho remai
ing third at tho expiration of twel
months. Titles delivered on payment
first instalment, and that the title here
proposed to be conveyed shah revert to t
State, on default being made Of any of t
foregoing conditions, including payme
of all the purchase money.
This water power with its location, in t
judgment of the Commissioners, is u
equaled by any in the State of South Cai
lina, and not surpassed hy Tiny in t
Southern country.
