AUOUSTA, Jauuary 30.-There has been an
increased demand for cotton, to-day, and
prices show an improving tendency. The
offering stock is quite light. The receipts
at thia point :vre falling off rapidly.
CHARLESTON, February 2.-Tho receipts
of cotton since our last have amounted to
142 bales of Sea Island and 2,523 bales of
upland. The transactions during the
early part of the week, owing to a fall in
the English and Northern markets, were
at a decline of about 2c. from the quota?
tions of the'previous week, but on Wednes?
day the spirit of tho market improved, and
considerable sales took place at 46@47c.
for middling to strict middling, and 48c.
for good middling. The sales yesterday
were very limited, buyers, apparently,
having no disposition to operate. We
quote middling, 45@46c; strict middling,
47c. ; good middling, 48c. Sales of Sea Is?
land nave taken place at $1@$1.60.

About 4,000 bushels of rough rice have
come to hand during the week, part of this
being seed rico. We bear of no chango in
the market, and quote seed rice at $5 *?
bushel; rough ric? $2 to $2.50 y bushel,
and clean Carolina ll to 12 cents %i tb.
Common No. 3 rosin has been sold at
$4.50 to $5 bbl.; repacked mixed, $5.75
to $7 ti bbl., and solid mixed at $3 bbl.
Spirits turpentine bas been sohl at OG to
67 cents per gallon.
There have been some arrivals of both
Eastern and North River hay during tho
week, and we learn of sales of the former
at $1.60 ^) hundred, and of thc latter at
$1.55 hundred, both from the vessel.
The receipts of corn during thc week
have been very heavy, and snch sales as
have taken pl ice have generally been at
reduced prices. White corn has been dis?
posed of ni considerable quantities at $1.21
@$1.23 cents ^ bushel.
Oats have also been received in large
supply, and we quote the market with a
very heavy stock at 65?70 cents per
bushel.
There bas been no supply of salt from
foreign ports during the week, but an
arrival coastwise brought 1,000 ,-acks
Liverpool. We hear of sales from on ship?
board at $1.80 ^ sack, but parties are
generally asking $2.00@$2.25 sack.
Freights remain thc same as last week.
Bills of Exchange on England are selling
at $6.60<Si$6.60.J. Sight drafts on the
North are purchased by the banks at par
and sold at ? per cent, premium.
Gold is purchased hythe brokers at 41,
and sold at 42@43.
