"Do you smoke, sir ?"

" Have you a spare cigar ?"
"Yes, sir," (extending a short six.)
" Now, sir, what is the first duty of
a lawyer ?"
" To collect fees."
" Right. What is thc second ?"
"To increase thc number of his
clients. "
" When does your position toward
your client chango ?"
" When making a bill of cost."
"Explain."
" We then occupy the antagonistic
position ; I assume the plaintiff, and
he becomes defendant."
" A suit decided, how do you stand
with the lawyer conducting the other
bill ?"
" Cheek by jowl."
' ' Enough, sir ; you promise to be?
come an ornament to your profession,
and I wish you success. Now, are
you aware of the duty you owe me ?"
" Perfectly."
" Describe it."
" It is to invite you to drink."
"But, suppose, I decline ?"

t J invest in pork. Before arriving at
Lafayette he fell into a doze, und
startled by the stopping of a train at
the market space, he sprang from his
se.it, and, half awake, started forward,
and then remembering his carpet-sack
aud money, went back but got into
the wrong seat, where, by a singular
coincidence, was n carpet-sack pre?
cisely like his own. He determined
to take the sleeping-car, and had ac?
tually placed the carpet-sack under
his head for safe-keeping, and was off
to dreamland, when the owner of the
capet-sack came blustering into the
car in "search of that ar man who
stole my sack."
The sequel nit'y be imagined. Our
commission mua showed light in de?
fence of his property, but finally con?
vinced that the carpet-sack contained
nothing more than a few pieces of
clothing, some fire-crackers for the
children, four pounds of tobacco and
a package of tea, he became positively
frantic. Hatless, coatless and almost
pantless, he rushed through the car
to the seat he had vacated, where he
found his sack and money undis?
turbed. The excitement made him
sick, and he thought his hair lind
turned gray in the agony of suspense.
A WESTFKN GHOST STOHY.-The
Western papers tell in good faith an
incredible ghost story, and bael: it up
by the sworn affidavits of several re
spectable persons at Grand Traverse,
Michigan. A spiritual mediumess at
?that place, whose husband was a stub?
born disbeliever in the "manifesta?
tions," assured him in her dying
breath that she should re-appear to
him in her budy at his death to con?
vince him of the truth of her belief.
Several weeks after he was taken sick,
anda "spiritual" rumpus was kept
up in the house until his decease,
which soon followed. Just before his
death, which occurred at midnight,
heavy and irregular footsteps were
heard in the hall, the door was burst
open, and the stenchful remains of a
human body, reeking with putre?
scence, stalked h:to the room, and in
a muffled voice reminded the dying
man of the promise, and, as he died,
fell a horrid mass upon the floor. An
examination of her grave proved it to
be empty. The story created intense
excitement, and the house where the
afluir was said to have occurred was
burned by the friends of the family.
