Thc Fashions.
The first snow has fallen, and is
already gone; but it lasted long
enough to make us feel that winter is
fairly inaugurated; and we turn with
renewed interest to the record of
winter fashions. It is difficult to say
with certainty what will be the most
prevailing article for out-door wear,
in tho way of outer covering. The
short sacque, in every variety of
heavy goods, is still worn, and always
greatly admired. The heavy, rich,
furry goods is by far the most popular
material; and in white, gray, luir and
mixed colors, it is so handsome that
nothing has yet been discovered suffi?
ciently beautiful to supersede it, and,
of course, no modiste nor no fashion
leader is willing to go bark on her
last favorite, and wear something that
does not equal it in beauty. In Paris
the favorite material for these short
sacques is the skin of a species of
snjjdl sea-calf-and to be found in
Canada-which is taken from the
hapless animal, as soon after it comes
into the world as it i? possible to
procure it. This skin is prepared
with exceeding care, and residts in a
most beautifi? fur, short, silky and
strong-popularly known as otter
skin, from its resemblance to that
little water-loving beast's coat, but in
reality in no way connected with the
otter. Trimmed with large buttons
of every style and color to suit the
wearer's fancy, this seal-calf's skin
malees one of the most stylish, fash?
ionable and dashing little coats which
any lady eau wear. It is strange that
the Parisians should have it first, as, if
it really comes from Canada, it is so
much easier to bo obtained by our?
selves; but the? French are always
ahead of everybody in fashions, and
this is no exception to the rule. Now
that the sea-calf, and the uses to
which its pretty, furry coat can be
put, have been discovered, no doubt
some enterprising New Yorker will
come out with Canadian sea-calf coats
for ladies, before the season is at an
end; indeed, we hope so, for the
artiele is exceedingly rich and be?
coming. *
Short black velvet jackets, trimmed
with straps of colored velvet, and
large false pockets in front, are worn
by growing girls, who are young
enough to sport hats in preference to
bonnets. They are too fanciful and
conspicuous for any save girls from
ten to fifteen-always a very difficult
age to dress advantageously.
What will be the shape of the win?
ter bodice ? is the question, with re?
gard to dresses, which is just now
agitating the bosoms alike of dress?
makers and dress-wearers ; and after
that, the not less important query,
What will be the style of sleeves
worn this season ?
To answer the first question, the
latest adviees from Paris inform us
that, without exception, every bodice
thai is made will be worn willi a waist
band. The bodice may be made
basquine-shape, but must have a belt
at the waist ; it may be made round,
or simply a "French waist,*' which
renders a belt imperative ; or it may
be made en Gabrielle, and worn with j
a waist band.
For evening wear, terry-velvet
dresses, striped with gold, are to bc j
fashionable this winter : they are |
marvelously rieh materials, and the
most effective are the pink ones !
striped with gold. A .short time since,
at a marriage celebrated in the Paris- ;
ian Court circle, the dress worn by i
the bride on the evening of her wed- !
ding day was blue terry-velvet, with j
narrow silver stripes. No trimming
is necessary for such a material ; the .
bodice was the Marie de Medici form, j
with revers of white blonde embro- ;
idered with silver ; the youthful
bride wore with this dress magnificent
family diamonds, mounted in silver.
For paletots, which, arc to be worn
when a dressy toilette is required, a
uew sort of plush, called sable d'or, is
Likely to be very popular. It is well
named, because the ground-work of
this material appears to bc golden
sand. In both violet and maroon it
is very effective. It is likewise used
for bonnets, as are also the terry-vel
vets striped with gold, alluded to
above.
Sleeves will be worn, plain coat,
tight coat and slashed, with little
trimming.
In bonnets something very new I
and beautiful has been introduced ; j
the shape is called thc Margaret of I
Navarre, and consists of a small flat j
crown, with a narrow curtain, and, i
in front, a small point, turning back
a la Marie Stuart, and forming a sort
of combination of thc Empire and
Queen of Scots bonnets. These bon?
nets have not yet become fashionable,
being, ^.indeed, only recently intro- j
duced, anti are generally made to j
order. We cannot recommend our j
readers to any one more certain to i
suit them than Madame Kallings,
Canal street. The material is gene?
rally a light gray felt, with a long
gray feather,' which completely en- '
circles the crown and falls down upon
the shoulder. At the side a small j
blue wing of any pretty bird is used
to fasten down the plume, and the
strings are of velvet ribbon, the same j
color as the wing.-New York Hews.
