To Miine WA Wtft. BT THOMAS SOARS. . Time only makes her love more dear, Her smiles of kindness more express, Her age with finer thoughts mo cneer, When sorrows my"poor heart oppres?. Time tells upon heir rosy face, Its bloom but plays another part, With deeper glow and richsr grace, Goes now to warm her older heart. Sweetheart still e'er until I die, Mine old wife, one year younger than I. Time only sweetens to mine ear, For counsel glean'd from pious love, Her voice still warbles soft and clear Of song, and wit, and jewell'd store. Time but more sweetly pales her eye, To charm my house with young orbs bright Kine loved ones, all eal th's dearest prize, Bear her bine eyes, with sparkling light, Sweetheart still e'er until I die, Mine old wife, one year younger than I. Time deeper sets her virtues rare, Like costly gems when richly wrought, My home the idol of her care, Store for old her constant thought. Time warns me of a last "good bve," On streams of life flow pure and clear, To cheer "on high" beyond the sky, Fd love h?r there as well as befe. Sweetheart still e'er beyond the sky, Mine old wife, one year younger than I. JUMWCS ny Religion. Near London there dwelt an old couple. In early life they had been poor, but tbe husband became a Christian, and God blessed their in? dustry, and they were liviiig in a com? fortable retirement, when one day a stranger called on them to ask their subscription to a ^charity. The old lady had less religion than her hus? band, and still hankered after the Sabbath huskings and easy shillings which Thomas had forfeited from re? gard to the law of God. So when the visitor asked their contributions, she interposed, and said : . ' Why, sir, wc have lost a deal by religion since wo first began ; my husband known that vciy well. Have we not, Thomas ?" After a solemn pause, Thomas an? swered : ' ' Yes, Mary, we have, lie fore I got religion, Mary, I had an old slouched hat, a tattered coat, and mended shoes and stockings; but I have lost them long ago. And, Mary, you know that, poor as I was, I had a habit of getting drunk and quarrel? ing with you, and that you know I have lost. And then, I had a hard? ened conscience and wicked heart, and ten thousand guilty fears ; but all arc lo:::, completely lost, and like a mill-stone cast into thc deepest sea. And, Mary, you have been a loser, too, though not so great a loser as myself. Before wc got religion, Mary, you had a washing tray, in which you washed for hire ; but since then you have lost your washing tray. And you had a gown and bonnet much the worse for wear ; but you have lost them long ago. And you had many an aching heart concerning me at times ; but these you happily have lost. And I could even wish that you had lost as much as I have lost ; for what we lose for religion will be an everlasting gain." South Carolina Railroad. COLUMBIA, S. C., DEC. 22, 1865.
