JMEISOEiriljAKrY The. World tor Sale. FROM AN OT.D MANCSCttlPT. The world for Hale! Hang out the sign ; Call every traveler here to me, Who'll buy this bravo estate of mine, And Bet*my weary spirit free ? It's going!-yes, I mean to fling Tho bauble from mv soul away ; I'll sell it whatsoe'er it bring The world at auction hore to-day. It is a glorious thing to me, Ah, it has cheated me so sore : It is not what it seems to be. For sale ! it shall be mine no moro. Come turn it o'er and view it well, I would not have you purchase dear ; It's going-going-? must sell, Who bids will buy the splendid tear ! Here's Wealth in glittering beads of gold, Who bids ? but let me tell you fair, A baser lot was never sold ; Who'll buy the heavy heaps of care ? And here spread out in broad domain A goodly landscape all may trace ; Hall, cottage, tree, field, hill and plain, Who'll buy himself a-burial place ? Here's love-the dreamy potent spell That beauty flings around the heart ; I know its power, alas ! too well It's going-love and I must part. Must part ! what can I more with love ? All over the enchanter's reign ! Who'll buy the plumcless dying dove ! A breath of bliss, a storm of pain ? And friendship-rarest gain of earth, Whoe'er hath found the giver his, Frail, false, fickle, and but little worth Who bids for friendship as it is ? 'Tis going-going-hear the call ; Once, twice, thrice-it's very low 1 Twas once my hope, my stay, my all, But now the broken staff must go. Fame ! hold tho brilliant meteor high, Ye millions ! now's the time to buy ; How dazzling every gilded name ? How much for fame ? how much for fame ? Hear how it thunders ! would you stand On high Olympus, far renowned ? Now purchase, and a world command ! And then bo with its crazy crowd ! Sweet star of hope ! with ray to shine In every sad foreboding breast. Save this desponding one of minc Who bids for man's last friend and best. Ah, were not mine a bankrupt life, This treasure should my soul sustain ; But hope and I are now at strife, Nor ever may unite again. Ambition, fashion, show and pride, I part from all forever now ; Grief in an overwhelming tide Has taught my haughty heart to bow. By death's stern shaft of all bereft, ' I weep, yet humblv kiss the rod ; The best of all I "still have left, My faith, my Bible, and my God. Total Disappearance of the Famous ! App.e-T?ce. The Richmond Enquirer says : A gentleman just from Appomattox Court House informs us that there is nothing left of the apple-tree under which General Lee surrendered but a red hole in the ground, and it is feared that, unless the hole is fenced in, that also will be removed. It is a subject worthy of notice, too, that the apple-tree alluded to was the j largest tree iu the world, being ut j least forty times the bulk of the cele- ! brated California oak, which was about the size of the citadel of Hum. About nine hundred and seventeen ? cords of this apple-tiee have already been distributed over the' United ' States, in tho shape of walking-canes, , fishing-poles, lunbrella-handles, po- ! lice..len's clubs, work-boxes, sewing : machines, wr-?..ng-desks, vest buttons, : corks, charms, lead-pencils, pen-han- j dies, toddy-muddlers, tooth-picks, ! tobacco pipes and snuff-boxes. The I number of persons felicitating in these heroic relies is estimated at about ; twenty-eight millions, which is equi- ! valent to thc number of Confederates ! ?killed, wounded and missing io the late war, according to the published statements of Northern newspapers, from statistics gathered at the time. I In fact, this apple-tree enjoys as wide a circulation os any bogus medicine in existence; but for the fact that i General Lee didn't surrender under 1 any apple-tree at all, it might be up- I propriately placed, photographically, among tke. historic archives of the ; country as the "greatest tree in ail | history. lt is useless to attempt a conviction | of the truth so long as i\\<% stock on j hail'"! of the great A; po in mat tox apple- I tree is unexhausted ; and, perhaps, I ? - en when that supply giv< s out-for ; t' destruction of apple-trees in New ' England, when thc Maine law excite.1 1 a prejudice against brandy, renders ; snell an exhaustion probable-history I will claim tho original as the rightful possessor of the lame of the locality, and the surrender of General Lee nuder an apple-tree will be fixed in the national records and the pictorial reports from the Patent Oifieo on j pomology and agriculture. A New York paper no ices the fact that some firm in that city, stickers after apple-tree notoriety, lau! pre? sented to Mrs. Gen. <?rant a variety of fancy articles manufactured by them from the "identical" Appo? mattox apple-tree. Am.mg the arti? cles was a dress-comb about the size of a small p;arden rake, winch, it i- 1 stated, Mrs. G. Would -wear' at tin next public soiree. Has no East Yankee succeeded in preserving some of the seed* of apples borne by that apple-tree ? When apple-tree timber is exhausted, tho seeds would com? mand any price. Thc safe you made for me some time ago was in the office of tfio Museum, on thc second floor, back part of the building, and in the hottest of the tire.
