PKOSPECT OF ANOTIIF.II COLLISION
OF AUTHORITY.-A few days since thc
Freedmen's Court sot about thc good j
work of closing up the negro dance j
houses which hare been opened by a ;
low class of white mau in the negro
"settlement" just outside the cor
porste limits of the city, and which
were complained of by the citizens as
intolerable nuisances. Oue of these
was run by Dan, .Dunuegan & Co.,
on Church street, and report said it
was frequented by gangs of lawless,
drunken negroes, to the great scandal
of the neighborhood, ' 'and the peace
and dignity of the State." Dunn egan
was arrested, taken before the Freed?
men's Court and fined $50. Dunue?
gan subsequently went before the
grand jury of the United States.Dis?
trict Court and lodged ' 'an informa?
tion," and that body returned an in?
dictment against John Lawrence,
Judge of the Freedmen's Court, and
his clerk, J. B. Coon, for "extorting
money under cover of their office.
A warrant was served upon them, but
no bail was given, and we learn that
* Judge Lawrence has been ordered by
the Freedmen's Bureau not to obey
tho warrant, as lie was in the discharge
of his duty.-Nashville Union.
DISQUIETUDE TN CANADA. - Tho-j
New York Herald gives the following
as a snmmajy of news from that :
province :
The French inhabitants of Cunada 1
are adding to thc disquietude which j
the Fenian excitement luis recently j
inflicted on the Canadian Govern- 1
ment. The French organs un il the j
members of tho French association
known as the Sons of Libert}', have '
become very bold in their denuncia- j
dons of British domination and
British confederation schemes. The j
French Canadians would rather see
the province annexed io the United I
States than merged into a colonial
union, whereby their influence and
their nationality would be completely \
overslaughed mid neutralized. Al?
ready the French newspapers in
Montreal have received a semi-official
warning in reference to the alleged
imprudence of their course. Mean?
time the members of the government,
backed by the British ministry, are
pushing their confederation pro?
gramme, but so fur apparently with
no positive assurance of success.
Wanted-$4,000.
IHAVE the above amount on hand.
Would like to eng:tge as clerk in some
good mercantile establishment, with a view
