A Retrospect.
"But ever and anon of grief subdued,
There comes some token like a scorpion's
sting."
I'm seated by the nursery hearth,
The fire-light flickers on the walls,
And as I've watched their flitting glow,
My memory too sad recalls,
Tho happy, happy past.
This night sweet visions have come back
I've watched the evening romp and glee,
And heard again each childish voice,
In prayer beside thy loving knee,
As in that blessed past.
Tho gentle tones of thy dear voice,
In accents Bwect, distinct and clear,
As fairy tale or bymn was read
To their attentive, eager ear,
Re-echoes from the past.
Thy form, too, as it was in life
Each changing aspect of thy face,
As with maternal love thou heldst
Thy latest born in fond embrace,
Oh, God, those joys are past.
How changed this room, how changed our
home;
For now thou sleepcst in death's repose.
And that young, helpless group are left
To battle with life s many woes,
And we to mourn that past.
Poor little ones, they can not now
Their bitter sorrow realize,
For when thoy ask, "where mother is?"
We tell them ''thou art in the skies,
And all thy trials past."
We picture thee to their young minds,
As a glad, radiant spirit; now
Their guardian angel here on earth;
And then they artless ask us why
Wc still can mourn the past.
Crush us not, if our heart rebel,
Great God, or if there ever rise
One murmur to theso sinful lips
Tears to our burning, aching eyes,
When we review the past.
In morey take our broken hearts,
And fit them as Thou scemest best.
And bring us by this chastening stroke,
To share with her those joys so blest,
When earthly things are past.
