SOUTH CABOLIXA ALL EIGHT.- ;
They have statesmen in South Caro- I
lina, in fact have always had them,
and Ave are glad to see that those of j
the present day seem to realize the !
situation and act with a degree of
common sense. The Legislature has 1
adjourned until the 25th instant, but,
before the adjournment, that body
passed the Constitutional Amend- ?
ment, and, as the telegraph informs
us, with but slight opposition. This
is as it should be, and we say. all
honor to South Carolina for it. Ten- !
nessee and other States that profess
to have had a vast amount of Union- '
ism all the time, hesitate and dally,
but South Carolina, the first t strike \
a blow, comes up manfully to the 1
work. She has passed the Consti- !
tutional Amendment, and now if she |
has or will ignore the rebel debts and j
conform to the other reasonable i
requirements of the national authori- j
ties, she may present her Senators
and Representatives at "Washington
with a reasonable hope that they will
be received.
Gentlemen here who profess to be
behind none in their devotion to the !
Union, admit that while they are |
willing that the Constitutional Amend?
ment shall be ratified by our Legis?
lature, it will be a bitter pili. Wiry
bitter ? We think it should be done
willingly, cheerfully, and that it is
birt right and proper that those who
control the Government demand it,
for we want the everlasting question
of African slavery buried so deep
that the "last trump" can't reach it.
After the example of South Caro?
lina, will our Legislature hesitate?
We trust not. Let those who com?
pose that body come together, then,
with a determination to forget tho
past, let bygones be bygones, and
perform their duty as patriots. The
Constitutional Amendment should
be ratified on the lirst day of the
session-it should be done by a
unanimous vote. Do that and we
may got a representation in Congress,
but fail to do it and there is no hope.
