license to keep a tavern or retail spirituous
liquors . within the city of Columbia, shall
apply, in writing, to the City Conned: and in
case the application be for a license to r? -
tail spirituous liquors, it shall bc accomp -
nied by the certificate of tico respectable free?
holders of said citv, recommending tho
applicant as a lit and proper parson to bc
entrusted with a liceimc to retail, and
agreeing to becomehis sureties: and in case
such application be for a license to keep a
tavern, it shall bc accompanied by the re?
commendation of at least six (6) respectable
freeliolders af the neighborhood where said '
tavern is proposed to oe kept, who shall cer?
tify that thc person so recommended by
them is of good repute for honesty and
sobriety, and known to the persons recom?
mending to have at least two sparc beds,
and necessary bedding more than are re?
quired for tin; family of the said applicant,
and is well provided with house-room, sta?
bling and provender.
SECTION 2. Ami, be it further ordained, j
That any person to whom a license to retail
spirituous liquors may be granted as afore?
said, shall, tagether leith the persons by

all and every person or persons to whom
license may be granted, shall, after comply?
ing with the above conditions, pay for each
and every license to retail spirituous
liquors, in quantities not less than a quart,
the sum nf thirty dollars; and for every
license to keep a tavern, ibo sum of fifty
dollars: and such person or persons, on
complying with tho conditions and making
thc payment aforesaid, shall bc entitled to
receive a certificate, signed by the Clerk of
thc Council.
