whilst canvassing New York:
"I have been engaged in an active
canvass in this State. I have had the
good fortune-and it is a good for?
tune in these days of railroad disaster !
and massacres, to meet no accident, j
I have met no loss, except last night
when my carpet bag was Steden from
the cars. I do not mean to say that
it was stolen by a Republican. But I
do moan to say that no Democrat
ever would have taken it. It was not
a case for any mistake, for it was
marked with my name in various
places, and the contents of it would
disclose to almost anbody whose pro?
perty it was. 1 by no means intend
to charge upon the Republicans the
having taken possession of that bag.
Least of all would I attribute thc
taking of it to General Kilpatrick,
who has been here. I desire to say,
in defence of General Kilpatrick, that
he is much more remarkable for
losing his own baggage than for t aking
the baggage of any ono else. Nor do
I hold him entirely to blame for that
because, if I can depend upon tho
representations ol his soldiers and
officers, the quantity ol' his baggage
requires a vast deal more watching
than I have ever been able to give to
